Plot - Sundar Ramasamy ('Thalapathy' Vijay) is the CEO of the World's leading company GL. He comes to Chennai, to cast his vote on the election day. But, he comes to know that his vote has been registered illegally. How this vote rigging issue makes him to clash with the ruling party people and how did he succeed in his political revolution forms the crux of the story.
Performance of the Star Cast - 'Thalapathy' Vijay delivers his usual best performance, with a massive screen presence. He looks so stylish as CEO and attracts everyone. When it comes to stunt sequences, he makes his fans to go crazy for his terrific action. From the beginning to end, the film satisfies every Thalapathy fan. His dialogue delivery looks good, but the variation in dialogue modulation could have been avoided. Keerthi Suresh plays an usual heroine. Still, she justifies her character decently. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar gets a great negative role. But, her characterisation gets strong only from the pre-climax portion. Still, she delivers her strong performance. Pala Karuppiah and Radha Ravi plays the main antagonist roles in the film. They both delivers a great performance, by showing the true shades of a bad politician in a great way. Yogi Babu doesn't get a space to entertain the audience, with his usual one-liners. His character looks like a small supporting character role only, but he justified it neatly. Prem Kumar, Lallu, Tulasi, Livingston and all the other actors have done their part very well.
Technical Works - Girish Gangadharan's cinematography work is really excellent. His visuals are so catchy, which creates a good lively experience of the political game. Sreekar Prasad's editing is as usual perfect, with sleek cuts. His cuts helps to maintain the intensity of the political content. AR Rahman's songs are good. 'Oru Viral Puratchi', 'Simtaangaran' and 'OMG Ponnu' songs gets a good response from the audience. His background score looks good in the action sequences. But, his usual terrific background score is seen missing in this film.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director AR Murugadoss joins hands with 'Thalapathy' Vijay for the third time. This combo becomes favourite among 'Thalapathy' fans. So, the expectation level for this film is really high. I appreciate him for giving a small credit to Mr.Varun Rajendran, for the common storyline. Apart from Vijay, Pala Karuppiah and Radha Ravi, the writing of other lead characters doesn't look strong. He presents this political thriller, with a commercial treatment. He delivers this commercial packaging in an entertaining way. Still, it backfires in few portions. He deals with 'Vote Rigging' in a very strong way, by being an eye-opener to '49-P' Law. He also deals with many current political affairs in the film. He also talks about the fishermen problems, by connecting it with 'Sundar Ramasamy' character. This helps the audience to get a good connect, but the strong impact goes missing in it. The dialogues are really good.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with a good start. As usual, the intro of 'Thalapathy' Vijay gets a good response. Just because of 'CEO in the House' song, the introduction scene is not so convincing. Without taking much time, the screenplay directly enters into the plot. Still, it takes time to create a strong interest towards the film. At a point, the screenplay maintains a good flow. The political play becomes interesting. Towards the interval, the screenplay becomes entertaining. The interval block is good. It has a terrific action sequence, along with the usual trademark Vijay-ARM combo dialogue 'I'm waiting'. In the second half, the screenplay takes much time to get back into the good flow. Later, the screenplay becomes engaging. 'Oru Viral Puratchi' song has been visualized in a great way. At a stage, the engaging factor drops down. From there, the political play becomes slightly weak. Towards the climax, the screenplay once again maintains a neat flow. In the pre-climax portion, Thalapathy's smart move to defeat the antagonist is really convincing. But, the climax ends in an usual and predictable way.
Main Negatives of the Film - Director AR Murugadoss's commercial packaging is not bad. Still, we are not able to get the convincing feel. In both the half, he takes much time to create the curiosity about the political content. In few parts, his treatment looks little bit preachy. The song placement of 'Simtaangaran' and 'OMG Ponnu' disturbs the flow. Even though the fans enjoy it, these songs creates a diversion from the main content. In the beginning, the political play has been treated well. At a stage, the director's treatment looks usual only, which doesn't create a stronger impact. Towards the climax, 'Thalapathy' Vijay makes a smart move for a checkmate in antagonist's success. But, the action treatment makes it more commercial. So, the climax doesn't create a strong satisfaction among the audience.
Verdict
'Sarkar' is a good political thriller from 'Thalapathy' Vijay - AR Murugadoss combo. The 'Vote Rigging' issue, along with the political content stays strong throughout the film. 'Thalapathy' Vijay carries the entire film on his shoulder. His massive screen presence and stylish look entertains the audience completely. In the screenplay execution, the film faces some issues in commercial packaging. The political play could have been more better, to get a strong impact. Still, the film doesn't give us a bored feel. The audience will come out of the theatre with a decent satisfaction. But, 'Thalapathy' fans will enjoy this film to the core just for his strong screen presence. This film deserves 'worth watchable once' category for Thalapathy's terrific performance and also for Murugadoss's awareness about 'Vote Rigging'.
