Plot - Deva ('Attakaththi' Dinesh) loves Thulasi (Adhiti Menon). In his childhood, an astrologer warns him to be away from vehicles. So, his mother doesn't allow him to learn and drive any vehicle. How this small matter plays a game in Deva's marriage with Thulasi and how he tackles it forms the crux of the story.
Performance of the Star Cast - 'Attakaththi' Dinesh delivers his usual convincing performance. Adhiti Menon delivers a decent performance in the given space. The chemistry between Dinesh and Adhiti doesn't work big. Devayani delivers her usual best performance. Her character is neither too serious nor too funny. Anandraj is the real show stealer. The humour content works well only in his portions, that too in the second half. Munishkanth plays a funny negative shade role. Towards the climax, his characterisation becomes little bit interesting. Lallu, Chaams, Renuka, Nanjil Sampath and Manobala have done their part well. Motta Rajendran plays an usual role only.
Technical Works - Saravanan Abhimanyu's cinematography looks decent. Pon Kathiresh's editing looks simple only. In few portions, his editing could have been more better. N.R.Raghunathan's songs are not bad. Among that, 'Enna Senja Pula' song is good to hear. His background score looks decent in few portions.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Gandhi Manivasagam sets the family people as the target audience. So, he tries to present a decent family entertainer. His cast selection is really good. But, his writing of the lead characters becomes weak here and there. The humour content should be very strong in a commercial script. In that case, Gandhi Manivasagam should have given more importance to it. The humour content in the second half saves the film little bit. His screenplay execution is not completely convincing.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with a very normal start. Later, the film introduces the romance track between Dinesh and Adhiti. From there, the screenplay goes in it's own flow without creating much interest. After introducing Devayani's character, the screenplay slightly creates an interest. Within few minutes, our interest gets dropped down. The interval block is an expected one only. In the second half, the screenplay maintains a good flow. Anandraj's humour helps the second half to be entertaining, till the climax. The climax is little bit hilarious.
Main Negatives of the Film - The director's screenplay execution in the first half looks amateurish. The romance track between Dinesh and Adhiti doesn't have a strong backdrop and it completely looks artificial. In the first half, the humour content doesn't create a laughter experience to the audience. The predictability factor plays a major play. Munishkanth's characterisation could have been written well. Because, we are not able to see the usual best performance of Munishkanth in this film. The entire film is completely dependent on the second half. The humour content in the second half saves the film from the disaster zone little bit. Still, the entertainment factor could have been more stronger.
Verdict
'Kalavani Mappillai' is a decent family entertainer, in which the second half is only entertaining. The screenplay execution of the first half is bad. The humour content in the second half works well for an extent. If the director concentrated more on the entertainment factor, this film would have been a successful entertainer. So, this film deserves 'watchable once' category for the humour content in the second half. Go and watch with your family, without any much expectations.
Cut Short Rating - 6/10
