Plot - Dinesh Kumar (Roshan) works in an IT company. During his childhood, his father insists him to focus only on studies. Without fulfilling his desires, he completely follows his father's instructions. This makes Roshan to succeed well in school studies, with high score. In his workplace, his HR pressurizes him to finish the work within the deadline. How the 'parent's pressure on studies' and the 'work stress' makes Roshan to suffer mentally and how his parents recover him from this mental illness forms the crux of the story.

Performance of the Star Cast - Roshan suits well for his mentally-disturbed role 'Dinesh Kumar'. He tries to reflect the emotions and sufferings of that character strongly. But, he struggles in many portions. In the future, he has to improve a lot. Still, he justifies his character decently. 'Aadukalam' Naren plays the 'strict father' role. He delivers a convincing performance, in which he shows his character's emotions strongly. Meera Krishnan plays as the mother of 'Roshan'. Her emotions works well in most of the portions. Priyaa Lal makes a good debut in Kollywood, by taking up a bold role. In the given space, she delivers her best. Jayaprakash, Singam Puli and Uday Mahesh have done their part very well. Monica plays a small role in Roshan's school flashback. She performs well in her portions. All the other actors have done their part well.

Technical Works - R.B.Gurudev's cinematography is really excellent, in which he makes the audience to visually impressed. Thiyagu's editing helps to maintain a good flow of flashback and present incidents. Yuvan Shankar Raja's songs are not bad. The different versions of 'Silu Silu' song sounds good. 'Neengalum Oorum' song sounds little bit different. His background score helps to elevate the strong emotions, in a convincing manner.

Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Susienthiran has to be appreciated, for talking about the side-effects of 'studies burden' and 'work-pressure'. He has given his complete best to convey a strong message to parents and office-goers. How this stress plays a game in a person's happiness and how it makes them to behave madly, has been through Roshan's characterisation. How the parents's burden on a child's education can result in a negative way has been shown well. Without making it much preachy, the director has presented it decently. With a perfect runtime of 99 minutes, he conveys whatever he want to say to this current generation people. When it comes to the execution of it, he faces some issues.

Screenplay Execution - The first half completely focuses on the effects of 'parent's pressure on studies' and the 'work stress'. The second half completely focuses on parent's attempt to get a solution for their son. In the first half, the film comes into a good flow after 10 minutes. From there, the screenplay travels in the past and present life incidents of 'Roshan'. Those incidents makes the family audience, to get connected with their life. The interval block is not bad. In the second half, the film maintains a good flow in the initial stage. Later, the solution's problem takes a different track. From there, the director's treatment will create some difference of opinions among the audience. That track convinced me a little bit. The climax is not impressive, but the message is good.

Main Negatives of the Film - The execution of the first half is really convincing, in which the content is presented well. When it comes to the second half, the director faces some issues in the execution. In the second half, the director completely focuses on the recovery process of Roshan. In the beginning, his treatment looks good. Later, it completely takes an another track along with the main content. From there, the director convinces only few set of audience. In that track, Priyaa Lal's characterisation has a greater importance. The director's treatment to show the recovery of a mentally suffered person is not bad. The solution, that Susienthiran shown for the recovery process is the main issue. It will create difference of opinions among the audience. So, the second half will not be completely convincing to all. It may also disappoint some audience. They may also get a feel that the film conveys a bad idea for this recovery process. So, it depends upon the audience mindset. Apart from that, Susienthiran should have avoided by introducing an unnecessary antagonist towards the end. Just because of that character, the entire climax portion looks amateurish. Without introducing that character, Susienthiran could have tried a different climax.

Verdict
'Genius' is a good family drama from Director Susienthiran, in which he has strongly conveyed the social message to the parents. His execution of the first half looks convincing and neat. But, the screenplay execution in the second half goes wrong little bit. It also leads to mixed opinion among the audience. The director's treatment in the second half is completely dependent on the audience's perspective. Still, the director has created a good impact about the 'parent's torture on studies' and the 'work stress'. This film deserves 'worth watchable once' category for the good social message to the parents.

Cut Short Rating - 7.4/10
