Plot - Antony is a sub-inspector in Kodaikanal. He loves Maha, with the support of his father George. Antony gets trapped inside the car, which is 6 ft below the earth. This happens without his knowledge. How George and Maha tries to find Antony and how Antony survives forms the crux of the story.
Claustrophobic - extreme or irrational fear of confined places.
'Antony' is said to be India's first claustrophobic suspense thriller, directed by newcomer 'Kuttii Kumar'.
Performance of the Star Cast - Lal delivers his best performance and he carries the entire film on his shoulder. Nishanth gives his best, still he struggles to emote. Vaishali gives her best in her portions. All the other actors have done their part well.
Technical Works - R Balaji's cinematography is really good, especially in the underground scenes. Kumar and Karthikeyan handles the editing of this film. They have given their best. Still, they should have concentrated more to maintain a steady flow. R Sivatmikha's songs are not so impressive. Her background score looks good in parts.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Kutti Kumar makes a decent debut in Kollywood with a new genre 'Claustrophobic Suspense Thriller'. When trying a new attempt, a director has to concentrate a lot in screenplay execution. But Kuttri Kumar's writing and screenplay execution works only in few parts. His flow goes pointless in few scenes. As the screenplay is not engaging, he fails to create an interest among the audience towards the film. The suspense is not properly built-up. But, his attempt looks good. Especially, his making deserves appreciation for those underground scenes.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with a beauty of Kodaikanal and then it moves to the hero's trap scene. Later, the film takes time to establish the characters. After that, the screenplay enters into the core plot. Towards the interval, the film creates a small curiosity among the audience. The interval point is not bad. In the second half, the film once again moves in it's usual flow. Towards the climax, the screenplay slightly creates an interest. The climax of the film is not so convincing, as it ends in an usual way.
Main Negatives of the Film - The director's writing is not stronger, which makes the screenplay execution weak in most of the parts. The hero's struggle to come out of the trap looks convincing only in two scenes. The romance portion between Nishanth and Vaishali comes as a speed breaker only. The director should have tried something to make the screenplay more engaging and very interesting. If he had created a strong interest, then the film would have been more convincing.
Verdict
'Antony' is India's first claustrophobic suspense thriller, in which the screenplay execution is not much stronger to create an interest. The director should have tried something to justify this new genre in a good manner. The audience will come out of the theatre with unconvinced feel. So, this film deserves 'watchable once' for a good attempt by a new team. Watch with very low expectations.
Cut Short Rating - 6/10 (For A New Attempt of Genre)
