Plot - Malishwaran and Rithu (Ri2) broke up their love at a stage. Due to this break-up, Malishwaran goes to high depression and starts blaming her. So, he decides to kill Rithu with the help of Aravind's idea. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Performance of the Star Cast - Samuthrakani Sir delivered a very good performance and scored well in his dialogue delivery. Sam Jones made a decent debut in Kollywood with a good performance and his characterisation reflected the depressed state of a love failure guy neatly. Athulya's transformation for this film was very good. She delivered a neat performance with her bold characterisation. Roshini Prakash's characterisation was not stronger with the film. Still, she gave her best. Bala Saravanan and Singam Puli did their part well.
Technical Works - The cinematography work by Rethish Kanna and Prakash was so good with nice visuals. The apartment shots were so good. Sudharshan's editing work was good. In some scenes, the editing work could have been better, as the continuity of one scene to next scene was not proper. The songs by Sam D.Raj was not impressive. His background score was good in some parts.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director VZ Durai directed some films like Mugavari, Thotti Jaya and 6 Candles. After a long gap, he came with a new script by highly targeting the youngster audience. In this film, he dealt the current generation problems on love and also about different relationships of love. He took a simple plot and tried to present in a different angle. I appreciate for his new attempt, but it worked in parts. The double meaning dialogues were used here and there, for creating a strong connect with the youngsters. The glamour was not used as a unnecessary element in the film.
Screenplay Execution - In both the half, the songs placement highly disturbed the film. In the first half, the screenplay becomes engaging at the core plot. In between, few scenes looked unnecessary. The interval block was good. In the second half, the screenplay was maintained in a very good flow. In between, the screenplay deviates from the main track. Towards the climax, the screenplay came back to the form. The climax portion was an usual one, where I expected some interesting twists there.
Main Negatives - First of all, the songs in the film could either be avoided or shortened. Then some scenes didn't gel well with the main content. These two things highly deviates the main core of the plot and also it makes to go down from the peak point. In this new attempt, the director should have tried some other idea on climax. But, he disappointed at that point. So, this new attempt by VZ Durai was not so convincing.
Verdict
'Yemaali' is a new age romantic crime thriller, which was highly targeted for youngster audience. So, the target audience will get convinced with the elements handled in the film. But, the director could have tried something better to make more convincing. So, this film deserves a 'worth watchable once' for a new bold attempt.
Note - This film is not for family audience. The girls who are comfortable with this genre can watch it.
Cut Short Rating - 6.8/10
