Plot - Bala (GV Prakash Kumar) is in need of money, to clear his debts with a loan shark. As he is unable to collect money in a short time, he decides to steal the required amount. He notices a bungalow, where he enters into it to steal the amount. But, he gets caught by the owner's dog 'Bruno' (Bruno). Another gang also comes to that bungalow, who are very dangerous. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Positives
GV Prakash Kumar delivers a good performance, by justifying his character perfectly. The dog 'Bruno' steals the show easily through his instant action and brilliant nature. The portions where it handles that dangerous gang are really superb and also it's loyalty shown towards his master is also very convincing. Suman plays his supporting character in a convincing way. In the limited space, Yogi Babu provides decent entertainment to the audience, with his usual one-liners. Raj Arjun, who comes as the head of that gang plays his part well. The other members of that gang have done their part decently. Samyuktha Hegde makes a decent debut in Kollywood. Her character doesn't have stronger importance still, she justifies her character decently. Munishkanth, Stunt Silva and other actors have given their decent support, in the given space. Nirav Shah & Saravanan Ramasamy have handled the cinematography of the film. As the film shows the incidents which happen in a single night, there are many dark visuals, which have been shot very well by them. As usual, Anthony's editing is good with sleek cuts. In the first half, the film travels between the present (night) and the flashback (the incidents happened in the morning and evening). He balances it through his cuts perfectly, without making our interest to lose. There is only one song ('Toto' Song), which has been placed in the end credits. GV Prakash Kumar's background score is really good, which elevates some crucial portions in both the half. Director AL Vijay has taken a simple and usual plot, for this single night thriller. But, he presents it in a good way, without creating a bored feel. He has not given importance to unnecessary elements, which makes to go with a short & crisp duration of 95 minutes. He doesn't elongate the romance between GV Prakash and Samyuktha, which doesn't give a chance to create a disturbance in between the thrilling plot. In between, he makes to laugh for some situational humour. The writing of the lead characters is good, in which the dog comes as the centre of attraction of the film. His screenplay execution is good, without making the thrilling factor to get reduced. In the second half, the screenplay creates a strong interest in the next proceeding. The pre-climax portion and climax portion is really convincing. The climax portion looks usual only with an emotional touch, but it will not disappoint you.
Negatives
In few scenes, the logical questioning arises in between. As the film travels between the present and the flashback in the first half, few of them may get the feel of the thrilling factor to be low because of the balance between those incidents. Director AL Vijay's way of setting the conflict is simple and usual only. Even though his screenplay execution looks good and provides an engaging feel, this thriller doesn't have any solid gripping moments. We will almost easily predict the next step of the lead actors. So, this thriller will not give you an edge-of-the-seat experience. Still, GV Prakash Kumar and 'Bruno' dog will hold your interest strongly, and the screenplay will not let you feel bored with the treatment.
Verdict
'Watchman' is a good thriller from the director AL Vijay. With a crisp runtime, he presents this single night thriller in a very good way. His screenplay execution is really good. This thriller doesn't have any gripping and unpredictable moments. Still, you will not lose your interest. GV Prakash Kumar and 'Bruno' dog will make you engaged with their presence. You will come out of the theatre with good and decent satisfaction. So, this film deserves 'worth watchable once' category. Enjoy this convincing thriller with your family and friends in theatres. 'Bruno' dog will easily steal your hearts through his brilliant act. So, pet lovers will have a good connect with it.
