Plot - Jaya (Priyanka Ruth) loves his college mate Ibrahim (Ashok Kumar). But, her family is against their love. So, Jaya elopes with Ibrahim. She gets converted into Muslim religion and changes her name as Rasiya. Mohammed Rawther(Velu Prabhakaran) is a very big drug dealer. Without knowing about him, Ibrahim works as an accountant in his company.  What makes Jaya/Rasiya to involve in this gangster life forms the crux of the story.

Positives
Priyanka Ruth (of 'Enakku Vaaitha Adimaigal' fame) has delivered a terrific performance. Her transformation from a normal girl to a merciless killer is really amazing. Her character is really bold, where she has to get beaten by the gangster, as well as to beat them black and blue. Her emotions work very well. She carries it very effortlessly, like an experienced actor. She gets into the skin of that character and steals the show easily. Through her expressions, she shows the rage of that character perfectly. She has a bright future in Kollywood. Ashok Kumar has played his part well in the given space. Daniel Balaji plays a strong supporting character, in which he has given his usual best performance. Velu Prabhakaran, who plays the negative role has delivered a convincing performance. 'Aadukalam' Naren's character gets major importance towards the climax, in which he had done his part well. Karthick K Thilllai's cinematography work is really good, by setting a good tone for this gangster thriller. Radhakrishnan Dhanapal's editing looks good in the action sequences. Hari Dafusia's songs are not much impressive. Shyamalangan's background score elevates some of the major portions, which creates an interest in it. The producer turned director 'CV Kumar', who impressed us with his creative sci-fi thriller 'Maayavan' is back with 'Gangster Thriller' genre. The plot of this gangster thriller looks usual only, in which the protagonist has been played an actress. But, CV Kumar tries to present it in a different way. The director has given good detailing about the 'drug mafia' and their activities. He has given credits to the films, which inspired him. He gives much importance to violence, in which the action gets a raw treatment and it looks realistic. So, there are many scenes with bloodshed. His writing of the characters is really good. He frames the female lead strongly, by showing the extent of both sides (soft & violent). Few dialogues are also good. He maintains the screenplay flow in a proper way, which sets the conflict at the right time. The screenplay pace is slow only still, he manages to create an interest in the gangster content. The interval block (placement of the title card) looks promising. The climax portion is really good and much convincing.

Negatives
When compared to the first half, the screenplay pace in the second half moves in a dead slow mode. This makes the patience factor to play a game there. It also makes to feel the duration to be very lengthy.  So, a few scenes may create a little bit boring feel. The slow-motion single shots are good only, but the overdosage could have been avoided. At a point, it will give us a feel of watching a Myskkin's film. Logical questioning arises in some parts. In between the second half, the importance of the female lead gets reduced slightly. The director could have concentrated there not to feel the emptiness of the female character. Radhakrishnan Dhanapal's cuts have an incomplete finish in some portions. The CG works could have been better. Few conversation scenes could have been shortened. The smartness shown by the director in 'Maayavan' goes partially missing in this film, even though both the films are different from each other.

Verdict
'Gangs of Madras' is a good female-centric gangster thriller from the director CV Kumar. The first half is really convincing. There are some issues in the second half. Still, the film manages to create interest. Priyanka Ruth steals the show with her elegant acting. She pulls off the entire film in a very engaging way. This film deserves 'worth watchable once' category. This film may or may not convince you completely. Still, you will get impressed with Priyanka Ruth's performance. With lesser expectations, watch it in theatres with your friends.

Note - As the film contains gore violence and many bloodshed scenes, the weak-hearted people are advised to avoid this film.

Cut Short Rating - 8.2/10
