Plot - Peter Jackson (GV Prakash Kumar) is a die-hard Thalapathy Vijay fan. He lives happily with his friends, without bothering about future. His father is a Mrindangam instrument maker. Vembhu Iyer (Nedumudi Venu) is a great expert in Mridangam. In carnatic music concerts, he easily attracts the people through his music. Once Peter gets a chance to attend his concert, which makes him to create a strong interest towards carnatic music. After several attempts, Peter gets a chance to learn carnatic music from him. But, Vembu Iyer's assistant Mani (Vineeth) doesn't like Peter and he always degrades him. How Peter succeeds in carnatic music field amidst the obstacles forms the crux of the story.
Performance of the Star Cast - GV Prakash has really shown a great improvement in his acting. As the film is a music genre, he gets a good comfort zone. 'Peter' character suits very well to him. His performance is really convincing, in which his emotions makes a good connect with the audience. 'Thalapathy' Vijay fans will have a connect with his character. Aparna Balamurali has delivered her best in the given space, in which her romance track doesn't come as a disturbance. Nedumudi Venu delivers his usual best performance, by justifying 'Peter's Mridangam Guru' role in an excellent way. Through his performance, we are able to know about the life of an expert in carnatic music. The guru-sishyan bonding between GV Prakash and Nedumudi Venu has really worked out well, which has given a good impact. Vineeth makes a comeback in Kollywood after a long time. He plays a negative shade role. He delivers a very good performance, in which his vengeance against GV Prakash works decently. Kumaravel and Aadhira Pandilakshmi plays as the parents of GV Prakash. In the given space, they have given their complete best. Dhivya Darshini (a) DD comes as a support for Vineeth, throughout the film. She plays her negative role, in a decent way. All the other actors have given their complete support throughout the film.
Technical Works - Ravi Yadav's cinematography work is really amazing, in which his visuals gives us such a lively experience. Anthony's editing looks simple and sleek. His cuts are so good, in which he maintains a neat screenplay flow. AR Rahman's songs are so impressive. The songs like 'Sarvam Thaala Mayam', 'Maya Maya' and 'Dingu Dongu' are my favourites. The visual format of 'Sarvam Thaala Mayam' song is so attractive. In this music genre, the background score plays a great role. With respect to that, AR Rahman has composed such a wonderful background score. So, AR Rahman fans will have a great musical feast.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Rajiv Menon has given marvelous films like 'Minsara Kanavu' and 'Kandukondein Kandukondein'. Those films are still favourite for many. After a very long gap, he makes his directorial comeback through 'Sarvam Thaala Mayam'. So, this film has raised the expectations among the audience. The bonding between Rajiv Menon and AR Rahman has been so stronger, which is the reason behind the success of those two films. Likewise, the magic has repeated once again in this film. His writing of the main characters 'Peter Jackson' and 'Vembu Iyer' looks so stunning, which makes the audience to get convinced with guru-sishyan bonding. He sets the conflict through the smart play of Vineeth and DD. He gives importance to romance track and emotions, with few limits. His treatment doesn't look artificial in any manner. As it is a musical drama genre, he is so careful about the song placements. So, the songs has been placed only with respect to the situation. His screenplay execution is really good, where he doesn't make the audience to get bored with this musical subject.
Screenplay Execution - The screenplay pace is neither slow nor racy, in both the half. In the first half, the screenplay begins with a decent start. After 'Peter Beat-u Yethu' song, the screenplay enters the starting point of the main plot. Later, the screenplay becomes engaging. Till the interval, the screenplay flow is really good. The interval block is not bad, which creates a good level curiosity towards the second half. In the second half, the screenplay takes some time to get into the same engaging flow. After 'Dingu Dongu' song, the screenplay once again becomes interesting. The climax portion looks simple only, still it convinces the audience with a good impact about the carnatic music.
Main Negatives of the Film - The screenplay doesn't have any twists and turns. So, the screenplay moves in a predictable way only. In two or three places, 'Thalapathy' Vijay references looks like force-fitted, as it looks just to get applause from his die-hard fans. In the second half, the romance track before 'Sarvam Thaala Mayam' song could have been treated in a little bit different way. Other than that, the film doesn't give us time to notice the flaws. So, we can consider these flaws as negligible only.
Verdict
'Sarvam Thaala Mayam' is a very good musical drama from Rajiv Menon - AR Rahman combo. Director Rajiv Menon shows guru-sishyan bonding between GV Prakash and Nedumudi Venu in a very convincing way. His screenplay execution is really enjoyable, which gives us a good impact. So, the audience will really come out of the theatre with good satisfaction. This film deserves 'must watch once' category for a great musical feast. Go and watch it with your family & friends in theatres, for a wonderful musical experience.
