Plot - Kaali (a) Petta Velan ('Super Star' Rajinikanth) works as a boys hostel warden in a college. In that hostel, Anwar (Sananth) gets friendship with Kaali. Kaali helps Anwar in his love matter. Singaaram (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and Jithu (Vijay Sethupathi) tries to kill Anwar in his hostel itself. Meanwhile, Kaali rescues him. Why Kaali personally care for Anwar and why Singaaram-Jithu wants to kill Anwar forms the crux of the story.

'Petta' is an action entertainer, directed by Karthik Subbaraj. He joins hands with 'Super Star' Rajinikanth for the first time. This film has released with 'Thala' Ajith's 'Viswasam' as 'Pongal 2019' release.

Performance of the Star Cast - 'Super Star' Rajinikanth delivers an effortless performance, in which both 'Kaali' and 'Petta Velan' characters will be loved by his die-hard fans. He looks so stylish as well as massive, in every frame. His body language will make his fans to witness vintage 'Rajini'. He looks very energetic in action sequences, where he steals the show easily. In few portions, he makes us to enjoy his timing comedy. His dialogue delivery is as usual good. Sasikumar plays a major role in flashback portion. He delivers a convincing performance in the given space. Vijay Sethupathi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the main antagonists of the film. Their negative roles are not much stronger, still they have delivered their best. Sananth's character gets major importance in the main plot. He justifies his character decently. Trisha and Malavika Mohanan plays a small role in the flashback portion. In the limited space, they have given their best. Guru Somasundaram, Bobby Simha, Simran, Megha Akash, Ramdoss, Aadukalam Naren and Vivek Prasanna have done their part well. All the other actors have given their best.

Technical Works - Thirunavukarasu's cinematography is one of the major positives of the film. His work is really excellent, in which his visuals are so appealing. In few shots, he has shown 'Super Star' Rajinikanth in a very terrific way. Vivek Harshan's editing looks sharp and sleek. His cuts doesn't have any improper finish. In action sequences, his editing is really good. Anirudh Ravichander's songs are impressive only. The songs such as 'Marana Mass', 'Petta Paraak' and 'Ilamai Thirumbudhey' are my favourites. His background score is mindblowing, which elevates the actions sequences to next level.

Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Karthik Subbaraj's dream to work with 'Super Star' Rajinikanth has become true. He specially dedicates this film to every die-hard fan of 'Super Star' Rajinikanth. In recent times, 'Super Star' Rajinikanth's mass screen presence goes missing in films like Kabali, Kaala and '2.0' (It has only few mass moments). So, his die-hard fans awaits to witness his mass screen presence. For them, Karthik Subbaraj has given a great feast through 'Petta'. He has written the characters 'Kaali' and 'Petta Velan' in such a way, that every die-hard fan of him should love those characters. He has used a vast star cast, which becomes a great advantage to this entertainer script. He has selected an usual revenge storyline only, in which he tries to present it in his own style. In that, he has mixed up Rajini's mass elements in a right proportion. He gives importance to the song placement, with respect to the situation. Still, his screenplay execution has some issues.

Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film begins with a good start. 'Super Star' Rajinikanth's introduction scene will be enjoyed by his fans. The screenplay moves in a good flow. When dealing with romance content, the screenplay comes out of that good flow. From there, the screenplay takes time to create a strong interest. Towards the interval, the screenplay becomes engaging. The interval block has a great bang. In the second half, the screenplay completely focuses on the flashback portion initially. The flashback portion looks promising, in which vintage 'Rajini' is seen in many places. After the flashback portion, the screenplay steps into the engaging track slightly. At a point, the screenplay looks entertaining. Towards the climax, the screenplay takes a top gear, by creating a great curiosity about the climax portion. The climax portion has a lengthier duration, still it has been executed in a good manner. The finishing touch is not so convincing.

Main Negatives of the Film - The biggest drawback of this film is nothing but the lengthier duration. Instead of 170 minutes, the film's duration could have been 150 minutes, which would be perfect for this action entertainer script. The audience gets the lengthier feel, just because of the slow screenplay pace. So, the patience factor plays a game in few portions. Few logical loopholes are seen and there, which are negligible. In the first half, Simran and Megha Akash shares their screen presence in the romance content. Without their characters itself, the director could have concentrated on the main track. In the first half, few portions doesn't create a strong interest. The writing of antagonist characters are not strong. So, Vijay Sethupathi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui doesn't get a strong point to create an impression among the audience. Towards the climax, the director has placed a small twist in the tale, to create a great curiosity. But at the end, he uses another twist to make that previous twist to go wrong. Without that twist itself, the film could have been ended. Because of that twist, the director's finishing touch doesn't look convincing.

Verdict
'Petta' is a good action entertainer from the director Karthik Subbaraj, in which he has utilized 'Super Star' Rajinikanth's screen presence in an entertaining and massive way. 'Super Star' Rajinikanth's performance makes his every die-hard fan to go crazy for him. They will love 'Kaali' and 'Petta Velan' to the core. Even though the screenplay doesn't give a bored feel, the execution could have been little bit better in few portions. Apart from the flaws, you will enjoy Rajini's screen presence in every frame. So, the film deserves 'worth watchable once' category to enjoy many mass moments of 'Super Star' Rajinikanth. Watch it with your 'Super Star' fans gang in theatres.
