Plot - The film has been set in the period between 1951-1981. Raja Krishnappa (Yash) suffers a lot in childhood, because of his poverty. His mother were counting her final days. During that, she gets a promise from him that he should become a rich man in future. After some incidents, he gets transformed as a don 'Rocky Bhai' in Mumbai. He gets an assignment to kill a highly influenced person named 'Garudan' (Ramachandra Raju), who controls the entire 'Kolar Gold Fields'. Many people have been treated as slaves there, under the control of Garudan's goons. How he enters into 'Kolar Gold Fields' (which has been considered as Garuda's kingdom) and did he able to kill him amidst the obstacles forms the crux of the story.
'KGF (Kolar Gold Fields): Chapter 1' is a historical action drama directed by Prashanth Neel. This film is said to be one of the high budget Indian films. It is the first installment in 'KGF' movie series. The trailer of the film created great expectations among the audience.
Performance of the Star Cast - Yash delivers a fantastic performance as 'Rocky Bhai'. He carries the entire film on his shoulder, by setting the vision of the film in a right direction. In mother-sentiment portions, he has really emoted well. When it comes to action sequences, he just changes like a beast, by blasting the villains with powerful punches and kicks. Srinidhi Shetty's character is just an usual heroine role only. Still, her portions doesn't come as a disturbance to the main track. She delivers her best in the given space. Ramachandra Raju plays the main antagonist role. He looks really terrific, and his character has been well-established. He delivers a neat performance for his character 'Garudan'. Anant Nag plays a journalist role, where he comes as the narrator by explaining the entire incidents. Achyuth Kumar, Malavika Avinash, Vasishta N.Simha, Dinesh Mangalore and B.S.Avinash have done their part well. Anmol Vijay plays the younger version of 'Yash' in the film. His performance is really good. All the other actors have given their complete support throughout the film.
Technical Works - Bhuvan Gowda's cinematography is really excellent, in which his visuals matches up well with the mentioned period. Especially in the second half, 'Kolar Gold Fields' portions have been shown in a very realistic way. Shrikanth's editing looks sleek and neat. His racy cuts in the action sequences works well. He has maintained the screenplay pace in a very good way (neither too slow nor racy). Kabilan and Madhura Kavi have penned the tamil lyrics for the songs. Ravi Basrur's songs are really good. 'Salaam Rocky Bhai', 'Dheera Dheera' and 'Veesum Soorai Kaatre' songs are my favourites. VFX works are also good. The set works are really nice.
Dubbing Works - Tamil dubbing looks good, which has conveyed the content correctly. Still, few portions could have been better. The dialogues (original version) has been written by the director, with the help of M.Chandramouli and Vinay Shivangi. Those dialogues has been translated well. Especially, few dialogues gives a good motivation. The punch dialogues are not bad.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Prashanth Neel has to be appreciated for treating this period drama, in a very genuine way. He stays strong with the content from the beginning to end. His hard work has been clearly seen in every scene of the film. The making of this film is really excellent. Even though he adds some commercial elements, it doesn't change the flavour of the film. With a good detailing, he has justified the mentioned period. His strong writing of Yash's character 'Rocky Bhai' is really a great plus. He has also mixed up the emotions strongly, along with the main plot. He has shown the pain of those labour in 'Kolar Gold Fields', in such a way by making us to feel pity for them. His screenplay execution is really good, which doesn't lose the strong engaging factor. He has also given few goosebumps moments in the film.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film begins with a good start. After setting a proper starting point for Anant Nag's story narration, the screenplay steps into the strong engagement factor. The intro scene of Yash is really terrific. After 'Salaam Rocky Bhai' song, the film steps into the main track. From there, the film travels on a right direction, without much deviation. In between, action sequences entertains the audience. Towards the interval, the screenplay becomes more engaging. The interval point is really superb, which makes us to wait for the second half eagerly. In the second half, the screenplay maintains the same intense flow. After Yash's entry in 'Kolar Gold Fields', the screenplay creates a strong interest towards the film. In between, few emotions really works well. In a scene, Yash's childhood and slavery in 'Kolar Gold Fields' gets a good interlink. At a point, Yash gets 'Rise of a Hero' moment, which has been executed very well. The pre climax portion maintains a suspense in the narration. The entire climax portion is really superb, which gets a great response from the audience. The lead given for the next chapter 'KGF: Chapter 2' is really promising. So, it raises a great curiosity for it.
Main Negatives of the Film - To register the protagonist's action strongly in our mind, 'hero-worship' treatment has been followed. Even though it looks good, this treatment could have been avoided in few portions. Few of them may feel 'Mogam' song (Tamannah's cameo appearance) as a speed breaker, in the proper engaging flow. In between, the film comes out of the engaging factor slightly. Meanwhile, two different scenes has been used in between the narration. We may consider it as an unwanted heroism. But, I think that it may have a connect in the next chapter. The duration may be lengthy for few people. Still, the film manages to keep us engaged.
Verdict
'KGF (Kolar Gold Fields): Chapter 1' is really a very good action based period drama from the entire team. Yash's stunning performance helps to work out the mass elements in a convincing way. The director stays strong with the content, without focusing much on unnecessary elements. His screenplay execution is really engaging, which entertains the audience. With a proper finishing, the film makes the audience to wait for the next chapter eagerly. The above mentioned flaws are negligible only. So, this film deserves 'must watch once' category for Yash's mind-blowing action and also for the engaging screenplay. With low expectations, watch it with your family and friends in theatres.
