Plot - 'Saravedi' Saravanan (Nakkhul), a jobless youngster tries to get a chance for acting in films. Meanwhile, he earns money by cheating few people. His father is an ambulance driver. Due to illness, his father gets admitted in the hospital. During that time, he gets a call from the mortuary. He gets an order for transporting a deceased body to the burial ground, along with their relatives. Instead of his father, Saravanan drives the ambulance for them. How that ambulance trip makes him to connect with 'illegal organ trade' mafia and how he tackles them forms the crux of the story.
Performance of the Star Cast - Nakkhul delivers his best performance. In the first half, he performs in an over-acting mode, in few portions. But in the second half, he manages to steal the show with a convincing performance. In action sequences, he looks very energetic. Aanchal Munjal makes a good debut in Kollywood, with a decent performance. Her character gets importance in the second half, in which she has utilized well. Nasser and Prakash Raj have given their usual best in the given space. Anjali Rao, Venkat Renganathan and few supporting actors have done their part well. Chandrika Ravi's characterisation is not properly defined. Her character has a negative shade, but it has not been properly justified in the film. Thalaivasal Vijay's extended cameo appearance is the starting point to the 'illegal organ trade' content. All the other actors have justified their part decently.
Technical Works - Vijay Ulaganath's cinematography is really good, with catchy visuals. In few dark portions, his visuals could have been little better. Gopi Krishna's editing looks sharp and neat. Still, some of his cuts has an abrupt finish little bit. NYX Lopez's songs are not so good. Still, the two songs 'Nadigga Nadigga' and 'Iraivaa Iraivaa' creates a small impression. His background score looks good in the second half, especially in the action sequences.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Raj Babu takes 'illegal organ trade' content as the core plot. He uses the commercial treatment, for the presentation of this content. Even though we have seen about this content in Thala Ajith's 'Yennai Arinthaal' and Sivakarthikeyan's 'Kaaki Sattai', he tries to differentiate it little bit. Still, it could have been much convincing. His screenplay execution is not upto the mark, in the first half. But, he manages to execute it decently in the second half.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with a good start, with a serious tone. Even though it looks usual, it doesn't make the audience to get bored. After the introduction of Nakkhul and Aanchal, the content is seen here and there. From that point, the commercial treatment plays a game, in spoiling the mood of the film slightly. Towards the interval, the screenplay becomes little bit engaging. The interval point is not bad. In the second half, the director focuses mainly on the 'illegal organ trade' content. The screenplay creates a good level of interest among the audience, towards the film. The flow is also decent, without much speed-breakers. Towards the climax, the screenplay takes the predictable route only. Even though the climax looks very usual, it looks convincing. The social message about the importance of 'organ donation' is good.
Main Negatives of the Film - Even though the duration is 127 minutes, the film looks lengthy in most of the portions. The screenplay execution in the first half has many issues. The director takes much time in introducing the lead characters. When the director tries to give a picture about 'illegal organ trade' mafia, he uses Chandrika Ravi's glamour in between. It looks completely unnecessary. The songs placement of 'Hero Hero' and 'Nadigga Nadigga' spoils the flow. Even though the screenplay execution looks decent in the second half, his presentation could have been more better. Few scenes gets more repeated in the lead characters flashback, which could have been avoided. The predictability factor and logical loopholes also helps the flaws to be stronger. In the finishing touch, few things goes incomplete.
Verdict
'Sei' is an average entertainer from the director Rajbabu. In the first half, the film makes us to feel that the film will be 'Vechi Sei-ing'. But, the director makes us to come out of that feel in the second half. In the second half, his screenplay execution looks convincing and decent, when compared to the first half. Still, the entertainment factor could have been stronger. So, this film deserves 'watchable once' category for Nakkhul's performance and also for the better second half. Watch without much expectations for a decent time-pass.
Cut Short Rating - 6.4/10
