Plot - Arunkumar (Vishnu Vishal) wants to become a film director. He gathers many info about 'Psycho Killers' and their technique of crime for his debut film. He narrates his script to many producers, but they reject it. His family situation makes him to come out of his passion and he accepts the police job offer. At that time, a psycho killer creates a panic situation among the city. He sets his target as school girls and he tortures them to death very brutally. How Arunkumar puts an end to this psycho-killer case and what are all the problems he face in between forms the crux of the story.

Performance of the Star Cast - Vishnu Vishal delivers an outstanding performance, in which his energetic level makes him to fit into that police character perfectly. The way he tackles the situation using his presence of mind is really stunning. His rage to find the pyscho killer is seen in every frame. Amala Paul delivers her best performance in the given space. The small romantic track between Vishnu and Amala Paul doesn't come as a speed breaker. Munishkanth's character has more serious and emotional shades. He really scores well in a strong emotional scene. Suzana George makes the entire audience to feel hatred for her, with a strong dominating role. She delivers her complete best to her character, for being an obstacle in Vishnu's attempt to find the killer. Kaali Venkat plays a good supporting character role and he has justified it very well. Baby Monica as usual gives her cute performance. Abirami, Priya, Raveena and Raghavi gives their best. All the other actors have given their convincing performance. The actor (Don't know his name) who plays the psycho killer character has justified the character neatly with a good act.

Technical Works - P.V.Shankar's cinematography looks great, in which he sets the tone of the film properly. His visuals helps the crime scenes and the protagonist's fight to find the psycho killer to look very lively. The night visuals have been captured in a good way. San Lokesh's editing looks very crisp and neat. His sleek cuts helps the suspense factor to maintain a proper flow. His editing makes the screenplay to be little bit racy, without feeling much about the lengthy duration. Ghibran's songs are really superb. 'Kadhal Kadal Thaana' is my favourite one. His background score is really terrific, which helps to elevate the situation to the next level. Through his background score, the suspense element doesn't loses it's energy, even for a single second.

Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Ram Kumar comes up with his second film 'Ratsasan', after the release of 'Mundasupatti' in the year 2014. Even though he takes a long duration for his second film, he has really utilized that time very preciously for the proper research of psycho killers. This reflects in every scene of the film. He gives importance only to the needs of the script and it makes the content to be very strong. He sets a lengthier duration, but his presentation doesn't make it as a major flaw. He frames the police characters and the psycho killer character in a very convincing manner. This helps him to set the conflict very strongly. He also registers about the safety of girls, by giving a small awareness in few scenes. His screenplay looks very intriguing, which makes the audience to be completely engaged with it. The  screenplay makes the entire audience to be very connected with the film, without any single deviation. In the title logo, the piano has been used as the major element. He has explained about it in the film clearly.

Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film begins with a great opening about the crimes. From the title card, the film focuses on Vishnu's cinema passion and his situation to enter into the police job. A scene where his research about psycho killers gives a lead for the unsolved case is the starting point of the suspense factor. From that point, the suspense builds up very strongly. It leads to the further investigation, in which 'sexual abuse' content is also used. The gripping screenplay makes us to sit in the edge of the seat. In between, few scenes gets a great applause from the audience. Towards the interval, the screenplay becomes more engaging. The interval block is really terrific and it makes us to think more about the second half. In the second half, the film takes the emotional side for few minutes. The emotional track will really make us to feel for it. After that, the screenplay slowly comes back to its gripping form. The clues that Vishnu get to take next step and the rescue operation scene is really stunning. The twists and turns are really superb. The character of psycho killer gets revealed in the mid of the second half. The flashback portion of the psycho killer looks convincing. With the same intense flow, the pre-climax portion comes. It increases our curiosity about the ending of the film. A particular portion in the pre-climax portion gets a terrific response. The climax of the film is really superb.

Main Negatives of the Film - I already said that the duration of the film is not a great barrier to deviate our interest. The romance track between Vishnu and Amala doesn't disturb the flow. But,the logical loopholes can be seen here and there. Other than that, the director doesn't give us a space to think about flaws.

Verdict
'Ratsasan' is an extaordinary psycho thriller in recent times, in which Ram Kumar's intriguing screenplay helps the audience to be very engaged with the film. The intensity of the crimes doesn't come to a low level. The way he builds up the suspense factor, makes the audience to get anxiety about the investigation and solving of the mystery. Vishnu Vishal's energetic performance also stays strong with the content. From the beginning to end, the film doesn't make the audience to get deviated for a single second. You will really come out of the theatre with a complete satisfaction. So, this film deserves a 'must watch' category for the gripping screenplay and also for the performance of the star cast. Don't miss this film in theatres.
