Plot - This film is based on the life of 'Kayamkulam Kochunni', who steals from rich to feed the poor people. What makes Kochunni (Nivin Pauly) to get transformed into a highly-skilled thief and why he is called 'Kayamkulam Kochunni' forms the crux of the story.

Performance of the Star Cast - Nivin Pauly delivers an outstanding performance as 'Kayamkulam Kochunni'. After the transformation as 'Kayamkulam Kochunni', he looks very terrific. His involvement in the 'Kalari' action sequences are superb. Mohanlal plays an extended cameo role only. Still, he steals the show with his majestic screen presence for 'Ithikkara Pakki'. His role plays the major act in the transformation from 'Kochunni' to 'Kayamkulam Kochunni'. Priya Anand delivers a neat performance in the given space. Babu Antony gets a good role towards the climax, in which he scores well. Sunny Wayne delivers his best. Priyanka Thimmesh, MS Bhaskar and Manikandan R Achari have justified their supporting character roles perfectly. All the other actors have done their part well.

Technical Works - Binod Pradhan's cinematography work is really excellent, in which he gives a realistic feel of that period in every scene. Sreekar Prasad's editing looks neat and sleek, without any abrupt finish. Gopi Sundar's songs are really impressive. Among the three songs, 'Kalariyadavum' and 'Thjanajana Naadam' are my favourites. His background score looks terrific throughout the film.

Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Rosshan Andrrews is well-known for his films like 'Mumbai Police' and 'How Old Are You'. In this film, he tries to give a sincere tribute to 'Kayamkulam Kochunni'. Again, he joins hands with writers Bobby-Sanjay for this high-budget film. His making looks really good, in which he gives a proper detailing about the lifestyle of both Malayali people and British men. How the caste discrimination plays a role during that period has been shown. He gives great importance to 'Kalari', which plays a role in the action sequences. He glorifies the act of 'Kayamkulam Kochunni' character in a very neat manner. In the screenplay execution, the team has given their best to present it in a convincing way. Still, the interest gets slowed down in few portions.

Screenplay Execution - In both the half, the screenplay execution looks slow only. In the first half, the film begins with a great intro scene of 'Kayamkulam Kochunni' character. From there, the screenplay comes to the flashback portion. Then the screenplay focuses on romance track between Nivin Pauly and Priya Anand for few minutes. The romance track makes 'Kochunni' character into the next stage. Later, the screenplay gets a good flow towards the pre-interval block. At that point, the screenplay becomes interesting. The interval block sets a good starting point of transformation through Mohanlal's terrific screen presence. In the second half, the screenplay goes in a very good flow. From there, the screenplay sets a good start for gripping factor. It makes the screenplay to travel in a right path. In the mid portion, the screenplay makes our interest to slow down. Later, it takes some time to come into the track. Towards the climax, the screenplay becomes little bit engaging. The climax portion is really stunning, in which the real action of 'Kalari' is seen.

Main Negatives of the Film - In the first half, the screenplay execution gives us a feel of 'not-bad', just because of the normal life of 'Kochunni' character. Even though it doesn't look boring, our interest gets slightly deviated. It happens in the second half too. This is just because of the normal screenplay execution in those portions. In those portions, the screenplay could have been more better to keep us engaging. This makes the audience to get few disappointments in this periodic drama.

Verdict
'Kayamkulam Kochunni' is a good periodic drama by Director Rosshan Andrrews. Nivin Pauly has given life to 'Kayamkulam Kochunni' character, through his convincing performance. Mohanlal's screen presence is also a biggest plus. In both the half, the slow screenplay execution doesn't give us a bored feel. Still, the screenplay looks normal in few portions, which doesn't create a great impact. It could have been better in those portions. This makes us to come out of the theatre with few disappointments. So, this film deserves 'worth watchable once' category for the performance of Nivin Pauly and also a sincere tribute to great Robin-Hood 'Kayamkulam Kochunni'.
