Plot - Govindarajan (Prakash Raj) suffers from Alzheimer's disease. His son 'Shiva' (Vikram Prabhu) leaves him in a care centre for 'Alzheimer Patients' because of his job in Mumbai. After a long gap, Shiva comes to Chennai and he takes his dad for shopping. When Shiva leaves him in the care centre, Govindarajan goes missing. Ranga (Samuthrakani) kidnaps a police officer, as he gets an order from his boss. How Govindarajan comes in Ranga's kidnap attempt and how Shiva finds his father forms the crux of the story.
'60 Vayadu Maaniram' is an official remake of Super-Hit Kannada Film 'Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu'. This film is directed by Radha Mohan. Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj and Samuthrakani plays the lead roles. Vikram Prabhu plays as the son of Prakash Raj in the film. This film deals with the father-son emotions.
Note: As I haven't watched 'Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu', I have written my review about '60 Vayadu Maaniram' without any comparison with the original version.
Performance of the Star Cast - Prakash Raj delivers an outstanding performance, in which he shows the exact replica of 'Alzheimer' patient. He really goes inside the skin of that character to show the innocent act of Alzheimer. When expressing his love for son, he really nails it with strong emotions. Vikram Prabhu delivers a very convincing performance. During the search of his father, he emotes very naturally. Samuthrakani delivers his usual best. His character looks like a negative shade role in the beginning. But, the soft nature in the later stage brings out his good emotions. Indhuja also gets a very good role. She delivers a very good performance. Kumaravel, Madhumitha and 'KPY' Sarath comes as supporting roles in the film. They have utilized the given space very well to score in their portions. All the other actors have done their part very well.
Technical Works - Vivek Anand's cinematography work is good. His visuals are not so attractive, but still it looks decent. T.S.Jai's editing is simple, in which cuts doesn't have any incomplete finish. Ilayaraja's songs gives the usual pleasant feel. 'Iravanai Thedi' song is really impressive. His background score helps to elevate the father-son emotions strongly.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Radha Mohan is always known for his feel good films. In 'Abhiyum Naanum', he has shown the beauty of father-daughter relationship and the strong emotions behind it. In this film, the bonding between a father and a son is the main element. As usual, the connect between him and Prakash Raj works very well. He extracts the output, which he needs from Prakash Raj and Vikram Prabhu. Through Prakash Raj's character, he shows the love of a father towards his son and how he cares for him. Through Vikram Prabhu's character, he shows the carelessness of a son and how he should take care of his father during his old age. The interlink of two stories is not a different one. But still, he treats it in both emotional and hilarious way with his usual feel-good touch. He doesn't give importance to any unnecessary element.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with a good start. Without taking much time, the film enters into the main plot within few minutes. From there, the emotional connect has been established strongly. The screenplay makes the Vikram Prabhu's search of his father engaging. At a point, the humour content is also gets mixed up with strong emotions. The humour content gives us a small entertainment. The interval block is not bad. In the second half, the film initially takes some time to get into the main track. Later, it completely maintains a good flow. The romance between Vikram Prabhu and Indhuja comes as a small portion. Later, the screenplay travels with a serious tone. One by one, the different stories comes to an end. This makes the climax to be simple. Still, we will get a good feel for it.
Main Negatives of the Film - Few logical errors are seen in between. In the second half, the screenplay makes our interest to slow down in the initial moments. The romance of Vikram Prabhu - Indhuja doesn't come as a disturbance. Still, the duration of that portion could have been shortened. The predictability factor plays a game in the pre-climax portion. Few people may feel the simple ending as a small disappointment.
Verdict
'60 Vayadu Maaniram' is a very good emotional drama from Radha Mohan, in which the father-son emotions have been conveyed strongly. As usual, he makes to feel emotional for the bonding. Also he makes us laugh with a good humour in the interlink portion. The screenplay execution in the second half has few issues. Other than that, the audience will come out of the theatre with a complete satisfaction. So, this film deserves 'worth watchable once' for the performance of Prakash Raj - Vikram Prabhu and also for Radha Mohan's feel good treatment. Go and enjoy the film with your family.
