Plot - Murugesan (Krishna) is always afraid of action and bloodshed. He suffers from 'Agoraphobia' because of his childhood incidents. His sister 'Thenmozhi' (Samyuktha Menon) is completely opposite to his character. He is very fond of his sister and he struggles a lot to make a happy life for her. But, she loves Anwar (Vishnu) without knowing about his true colour. How Murugesan tries to make his sister settled in life and what happens next forms the crux of the story.

Performance of the Star Cast - Krishna delivers a convincing performance, in which he justifies the 'timid characteristation' very neatly. Vidya Pradeep comes as an usual heroine for romance track. She delivers her best in the given space. Samyuktha Menon plays as the sister of Krishna, in which she delivers her decent performance. She gets a good role, as the plot is completely based on brother-sister sentiments. But, the director doesn't write her character strongly. The bonding of brother-sister between Krishna and Samyuktha works well only in few portions. Vishnu plays as a negative shade like role in the film. As we have seen him in innocent roles, we couldn't accept it initially. But, he gives his best for that character 'Anwar'. Black Pandi tries to make the audience laugh, but it doesn't work big. MS Bhaskar and Jayaprakash have given their usual best. Sendrayan's role is just like a small cameo appearance only.
All the other actors have done their part well.

Technical Works - R.B.Gurudev's cinematography has covered the beauty of 'Vathuruthy' area in Kerala. Prabaahar's editing looks good only in few portions. In most of the portions, his cuts doesn't have a proper finish. V.V.Prasanna's songs are good, in which 'Kedaya' and 'Yaaradhu' songs are pleasant to hear. His background score elevates some emotional sequences.

Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Kiran Chand has taken the 'brother-sister sentiment' as the main element of the plot. With that emotions, he frames the conflict to show the bravery of the hero. 'Kalari' means 'battlefield', in which Kiran doesn't justify the title properly. In the first half, he talks about the nature of 'Murugesan' character played by Krishna. So, the action is the key in the second half to create a transformation. But, the key element is not utilized well. His writing doesn't create a strong interest. His screenplay doesn't have any gripping moments. He makes the screenplay to reach a peak level. Within few minutes, it comes to the lowest point.

Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with a decent start by giving a small coverage about 'Vathuruthy'. After the title card, the film explains the strong bonding of Krishna and Samyuktha, which looks good. Then, the lead characters are introduced one by one. After 'Kedaya' song, the screenplay comes into the main track. From there, the screenplay creates a great hype at the start and ends in an usual way. Towards the interval, the screenplay becomes little bit interesting. The interval block is good, which gives a good lead for the second half. In the second half, the plot comes into the serious track. After some time, the screenplay plays with the emotions of brother and sister strongly at a point. Later, a point comes to show the transformation of 'Murugesan' character. But, it has not been utilized well. The screenplay goes in a track without creating an interest. Towards the climax, the screenplay comes into a right track. The climax is good, in which the director shows the rage of Krishna with a smart play.

Main Negatives of the Film - The screenplay doesn't create a connect with the audience throughout the film. In between, we get a feel that the director's intention is to convey a social message regarding women. Later, our idea goes wrong. In the second half, the song placement of 'Yaaradhu' is really a great speed breaker. The twists in the climax portion are easily predictable in the pre-climax portion. The term 'Kalari' demands great action with bloodshed (not so gore). The director fails to deal it properly. The 'brother-sister sentiment' goes weak at a point.

Verdict
'Kalari' is a below-average action thriller from Kiran Chand, in which his screenplay execution doesn't have stronger connect with the audience. He goes on creating great hype and it completely comes down to the low level within a short time. The bonding of brother-sister works well only for a small extent. The director's presentation could have been more better. He should have worked hard to make the gripping factor strong. This makes the audience to come out of the theatre with disappointments. So, this film deserves 'watchable once' category for the performance of Krishna. Watch with it very low expectations.

Cut Short Rating - 5.4/10
