He wishes that his players should make their country proud by winning gold in Olympics. For that, he waits for the nation to become free from British rule. After Indian Independence, he forms a hockey team for India and he makes them to participate in 1948 Olympics. How he helps to win the gold in 1948 Olympics forms the crux of the story.
'Gold' is a sports drama directed by Reema Kagti of 'Talaash' fame. This film is based on '1948 Olympics', in which India wins gold for Hockey. Akshay Kumar plays as Indian Hockey Team manager. The trailer of the film creates good expectations. As planned, this film released on 15th August as Independence Day Release.
Performance of the Star Cast - Akshay Kumar as usual delivers an excellent performance. Even though he is the main lead, his characterisation is written like a full-length supporting character role only. Through his acting, we are able to get many patriotic moments and it also increases our love towards India. Kunal Kapoor's has a limited screen presence only. Within that, he delivers a neat performance with a very good impact. Amit Sadh, and Sunny Kaushal plays as the main hockey players. Their dedication is really appreciable, which is the main reason for the hockey match to look lively. Their emotions also works well in many scenes. Vineet Kumar Singh has justified his part in a very good way. Mouni Roy delivers her best in the given space. The chemistry between Akshay Kumar and Mouni Roy works well. Nikita Dutta plays as love interest for Sunny Kaushal. She plays her role neatly. Dalip Tahil, Jatin Sarna, Bhawsheel Singh Sahni and Abdul Quadir Amin gives their best. All the other actors have done their part very well.
Technical Works - Alvaro Gutierrez's cinematography is really nice, in which his visuals gives a lively experience of 1936-1948 period time. Anand Subaya's editing is neat, in which his cuts looks simple and sleek. The songs are composed by Sachin-Jigar, Arko Pravo Mukherjee and Tanishk Baghchi. All the songs are good, in which 'Naino Ne Banaadhi' and 'Monabina' are impressive. Other than these, 'Ghar Layenge Gold' and 'Khel Khel Mein' songs gives us goosebumps feel. It helps to increase the curiosity towards the game. Sachin-Jigar has really given best background score for this film.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Reema Kagti has to be appreciated for making this sports drama with a very neat presentation. Her making is absolutely brilliant. The director, screenplay writer, story writer and dialogue writer has a good level of chemistry. The film talks about the teamwork and unity between the players in most of the portions. Likewise, their teamwork is the major plus for this entire sport drama content to work big. Rajesh Devraj is the story writer as well as the screenplay writer for this film. By knowing the needs of this sport drama content, he has written the screenplay in a convincing way. This makes the screenplay execution to be perfect, without giving a bored feel. The dialogues written by Javed Akhtar gets a good response from the audience. In between, the film gives us a space to laugh for some situational humour.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with '1936 Olympics' scene. The entire scene promises us that the further hockey matches will be very interesting. After that, the film shows the struggles of Akshay Kumar to make the Indian players to be a part in '1948 Olympics'. In between, small romance between Akshay & Mouni and situational humour provides a small entertainment. Then, the screenplay gets a fire and it starts to focus completely on the game content. Towards the interval, the events of Pre-Independence and the division of India-Pakistan will be seen. The interval block is nothing but India getting Independence. In the second half, the film maintains a neat flow. The screenplay slowly starts to travel in an engaging track. The training session portions looks very interesting, by showing the importance of teamwork and unity. From the opening ceremony of '1948 Olympics', the screenplay becomes gripping. The semi-final match scene looks good. The final match scene is the biggest highlight of this film, in which the theatre turns into stadium. That climax portion makes us to sit in the edge of the seat with nail-biting moments and it also brings out our patriotism feel.
Main Negatives of the Film - The screenplay pace is slow only, in which the patience is must. In the second half, the small romance between Akshay and Mouni could have been avoided. 'Chad Gayi Hai' song cannot be said as unnecessary because it is set as a trap for Akshay Kumar. Still, the duration of that song could have been trimmed. Other than that, the film doesn't deviate our interest and the strong connect.
Verdict
'Gold' can be said of one of the best Indian sports drama, in which the entire team is completely true to the genre. Everyone's effort in this film is really appreciable and it helps to make a strong connect. The main hockey matches in '1948 Olympics' has been well-executed and it makes the audience to feel the theatre as stadium. Just because of this, we also starts to cheer up the players. This is the biggest victory for the entire team of 'Gold'. This sports drama really deserves 'must watch' category for all the sport-drama fans. Without the mindset of commercial entertainment, just go and enjoy the hockey match. Come out of the theatre with many patriotic filled moments.
