Plot - Kumar is a corporation trash collector, who lives with his mother happily in a slum area near Cooum river. Poongodi lives in Vaalparai. Kumar marries Poongodi, by hiding the truth of his real job. After some problems, Kumar and Poongodi shifts to an apartment. Arjun, a techie also lives in that apartment. How he enters into the life of Kumar-Poongodi and what happens next forms the crux of the story.

'Oru Kuppai Kathai' is a film directed by newcomer Kaali Rangasamy. Dance Master 'Dhinesh' plays the male lead in this film. Manisha Yadav makes a comeback in this film after 'Trisha Ilana Nayanthara'.

Performance of the Star Cast - Dance Master 'Dinesh' delivers a very naturalistic performance. He shows the innocence and pain of 'Kumar' character in a very convincing way. In 'Vaada Machi' song, his dance movements looks good. Manisha Yadhav delievers a solid performance, by justifying the strong and bold characterisation with a great maturity. Towards the climax, she emotes very well. Yogi Babu plays a small role, still he gives his best performance. Adhira and George Mariyan gives their best in their portions. Sujo Mathew gives a complete justification to his character. All the other actors have done their part very well.

Technical Works - Mahesh Muthuswamy's cinematogrpahy is really excellent. His visuals gives a realistic feel, especially the locations of the slum. Gopi Krishna's editing makes a steady flow for the film. Joshua Sridhar has given his best for the songs, in which 'Vilaagathe Ennuyire' and 'Vaada Machi' attracts the audience. Deepan Chakravarthy's background score is really good in many emotional scenes.

Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Kaali Rangasamy makes a good debut in Kollywood by choosing the illegal marital affairs as the main plot. The term 'Kuppai' in the title is all about this relationship. This subject is not familiar to Kollywood, but his presentation and the message he tries to convey is really good. He deals about the negative side of illegal marital affairs neatly. The screenplay execution to this subject makes us to easily relate with reality. The current generation's mindset towards the relationship is also shown. Some dialogues in the film gets a good response. He also talks about the life of the trash collectors in few portions of the first half. Those portions will give a positive thought about that job.

Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with a good start by building up the suspense. After some small humour portions, the film enters into the core plot. From there, the screenplay moves in a steady flow without any deviation. The interval block is an expected one, but it looks good. In the second half, the film takes some time to settle into the main track. The screenplay travels in a slow pace only. Towards the climax, the screenplay becomes engaging. The climax of the film is really good with a convincing twist. The finishing touch is really appreciable. When coming out of the theatre, the film gives a good satisfaction to the audience and it also teaches a small lesson.

Main Negatives of the Film - As we are so familiar with this subject, the screenplay moves in a predictable flow only. The predictability factor doesn't affect the entire film, but it makes a low level impact in few parts. Some small dull moments in the second half makes way to reduce our interest towards the film. The director elongates the subject so briefly in the second half, which could have been shortened. These are negligible flaws only, because of the strong impact.

Verdict
'Oru Kuppai Kathai' has 'Kuppai' only in the title. It is a very good film from debut director Kaali Rangasamy, in which his screenplay execution gives us a convinced feel. The audience will come out of the theatre with a strong impact. Except the above mentioned flaws, the film deserves a 'must-watch once' category for the strong performance of the lead characters and also for the strong content, which is needed for current generation people.

Cut Short Rating - 8.5/10
