Plot - Bharath is a call taxi driver, who loves Susila. When the bad guy Ganesh comes in Susila's life, she gets disturbed. How Ganesh makes Bharath to involve in a crime case and how that incident plays a game in many lives forms the crux of the story.
'Iravukku Aayiram Kangal' is a new-age crime thriller directed by Mu Maran. This film creates good expectations among the audience because of the superb star cast and crew.
Performance of the Star Cast - Once again, Arulnithi proves him to be the best in choosing different and good scripts. He delivers a splendid performance by giving a good justification to his role. Ajmal makes a comeback in Tamil Cinema after a long time. He delivers his best to the negative role given in the film. The female leads in the film such as Mahima Nambiar, Chaya Singh, Suja and Vidya Pradeep has a good involvement with the film, by making their characterisation in a good manner. They have given their best, to be strong with the content. Lakshmi Ramakrishnan, Anandraj, John Vijay, Aadukalam Naren and Murugadoss justifies their role properly.
Technical Works - Aravinnd Singh's cinematography is really amazing. His visuals in the night sequences sets a good clarity to the content, which gives us a great comfort. San Lokesh's editing makes a steady and racy flow for this crime thriller genre. He doesn't make us confused with the characters and their events. Sam CS's romantic tracks gives a pleasant feel. His background score is as usual terrific.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Mu Maran makes a neat debut in Kollywood, with a simple and engaging crime thriller. His writing of every character in the film is really superb. Just with a single romantic track 'Uyir Uravaadha', he gives his best to maintain the thriller genre in a right track. Initially, he takes some time to establish the conflict point around the lead characters. From there, he builds the intensity of the genre slowly and he makes it intriguing completely in the second half. When we are able to guess something, he makes our guess to go wrong, by placing some good twists. In two or three scenes only, our guess may work out.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with a crime case along with the title track. Later, it enters into the flashback portion around 30-35 minutes. Then the film sets into the main conflict. From there, the film travels in both flashback and present situation. The screenplay gets into the interesting track from the pre-interval block. The interval point looks simple and good. In the second half, the screenplay becomes more intriguing with convincing twists and turns. The film focuses only on the core plot without any deviation. Towards the climax, the film increases the curiosity. The climax is really good and convincing, which also gives a lead for the sequel.
Main Negatives of the Film - The director should have tried his best to set the conflict point within 20 minutes of the film, for making the flow more engaging. In few portions, some logical questioning arises there. Some characters in the film goes missing suddenly, who are highly responsible in the crime scene. These flaws makes our interest to slow down slightly from the track. Other than that, the film will give a satisfied feel at the end without any huge disappointments.
Verdict
'Iravukku Aayiram Kangal' is a very good crime thriller in recent times, which has many convincing twists and turns. The screenplay execution is completely engaging, except few portions. The film won't disappoint us badly. So, this film deserves a 'must-watch once' for the performance of the star cast and also for the intriguing screenplay.
