Plot - The tests conducted by Energyne in the space station becomes a failure, which leads to the release of dangerous gas in the earth. These gases makes some genetic changes in a wolf, a crocodile and a gorilla named 'George'. How the primatologist Davis Okayo tries to save his gorilla friend from the Energyne's trap with the help of Dr. Kate Caldwell and Russell forms the crux of the story.
'Rampage' is an American Sci-Fi Monster Based Thriller Film, directed by Brad Peyton. This film is based on a series of video games under same name by Midway Games.
Performance of the Star Cast - Dwayne Johnson delivers his usual best performance, with a good justification to his character. Naomie Harris delivers a neat performance as Dr.Kate Caldwell. Malin Akerman and Jake Lacy gives their best for the negative shade roles. Jeffrey Dean Morgan strikes well with his supporting character in the given space. All the other actors in the film have done their part well. The gorilla named 'George' in the film gets a good attention among the audience, with a well-written characterisation.
Technical Works - Jaron Presant's cinematography looks amazing with some good visuals. Jim May and Bob Ducsay handles the editing work. Their editing makes way for a proper screenplay flow with sharp cuts. Andrew Lockington's background score looks nice in some parts. The VFX done for the animals looks so lively. Also, the VFX works for the entire climax portion is the biggest plus. These things makes the film to be technically strong.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Brad Peyton handles the simple and usual plot, in which we have seen in monster-based action films. But, he gives proper detailing for the genetic terms used in the film. His direction looks neat in this 107 minutes duration. The screenplay team gives their best in making way for a proper flow, without adding any boring elements. But, their work is affected by the predictability factor. Some humour in the film works very well.
Screenplay Execution - The film opens with a good start, and it enters into the plot within few minutes. Then it slowly reaches the conflict point, without any boring elements in between. From that point, the screenplay becomes intense and it creates a curiosity from the pre-climax portions. The entire climax portion looks so stunning with mindblowing monster-action and mass-destruction sequences.
Main Negatives of the Film - The director takes too much in establishing the main conflict. Because of the cliches, the screenplay is not so engaging in some portions. Due to these, the screenplay moves in a predictable way. Even though the film is treated with usual elements, it doesn't gives any bored feel.
Verdict
'Rampage' is a good Sci-Fi monster action thriller, which follows the usual elements only. In some parts, the director could have concentrated more to make the film crispier. Still, the film provides a good entertainment for the audience without any boring elements. So, the film deserves 'worth-watchable once' category for a good monstrous action experience.
Cut Short Rating - 6.8/10
