Plot - Durai returns to his native village from Malaysia, to take revenge on his father Rathnam's murder. Also, he tries to solve the Jallikattu issue in his village, amidst the politics in the name of caste. Did he succeed?
Performance of the Star Cast - Shanmuga Pandian has really improved a lot, when compared to his debut film 'Sagaptham'. He gave a good justification to his character. Still, he faced some issues in emoting portions, especially romance. Hope, he will improve in upcoming films. Samuthrakani Sir delivered a very good performance, along with some goosebumps moments. Meenakshi made a nice debut in Kollywood, and she did her part well. Vela Ramamoorthy Sir and Mime Gopi gave their best in their portions. Marimuthu Sir and Thenappan Sir delivered a neat performance. Bala Saravanan's humour portions synced well with the situation, and it worked out very well.
Technical Works - Director P.G.Muthaiah handled the cinematography work by himself. The visuals were so good, which will really give us a realistic feel. Praveen KL's editing was so neat, with clear cuts. Santhosh Dhayanidhi's songs synced well with the rural background. The background score was superb in every scene.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director P.G.Muthaiah is one of the good cinematographers in Kollywood. His directorial debut with a rural subject was very good. He fixed the duration of exact 2 hrs, and he maintained a proper proportion in handling the rural elements. He didn't force any unnecessary portions in the film. He gave his best in focusing highly on the core plot. He gave less importance to romance sequences.
Screenplay Execution - Without so much of over built-up, the intro scene of Shanmuga Pandian happened in few minutes of the film. Later on, when he tries to find the mystery behind his father's murder, the screenplay gets an interesting angle. From there, the film focused completely on the plot till the interval block. In the second half, the village's situation along with the '2017 Marina Protest' link (news footages) was so superb. Thalapathy Vijay's video on Jallikattu issue was also used. Towards the climax, the screenplay was maintained in a good flow. The climax portion was handled in a normal manner, but still it looks good.
Main Negatives on the Film - In the second half, the seriousness of Jallikattu issue was maintained in a proper flow. Suddenly, a romantic song comes as a speed breaker in the film. Even though the romance was given less importance, that portion disturbed the flow. Towards the climax, the screenplay was predictable. In some scenes, a simple treatment was seen, which could have been better.
Verdict
'Madura Veeran' is a rural action drama, in which the main focus was on the Jallikattu issue and the politics behind it. In recent times, we have usual type of rural dramas. But P.G.Muthaiah gave a very good rural entertainer with the proper proportion of elements. Except these small flaws, the film deserves a 'worth watchable once' for the strong Jallikattu backdrop. The film will really work well with 'B' and 'C' centre audiences.
Cut Short Rating - 7.6/10
