Plot - The film is completely adapted from the poem 'Padmavat' (1540), written by Malik Muhammed Jayasi. This film is all about the life of Rajput Queen 'Padmaavati' and also about the valor of the great Rajputs.
'Padmaavat' was initially named as 'Padmaavati' and it was planned to release on 1st December, 2017. But the film got delayed due to several controversies and troubles. After making some changes, the Censor Board certified the film with 'U/A' along with several disclaimers. This bollywood film was dubbed into Tamil and Telugu, and it was released in both 3D and 2D versions. The original version is released also in IMAX 3D, along with 3D and 2D versions.
Performance of the Star Cast - Deepika Padukone delivered a solid performance and she really lived as the Queen Padmavati. She deserves an applause for her dedication towards this film, by giving a great justification to her dignified role. Ranveer Singh played as Sultan King 'Alauddin Khilji' and he delivered an outstanding performance, with a great level of cruelness and cunning nature. His dedication will show you the real Sultan King in front of your eyes. Shahid Kapoor played as Ratan Singh and he also delivered a very neat performance. Aditi Rao, Jim Sarbh and Anupriya Geonka gave their best in the given space.
Technical Works - The artwork was extraordinary with a great support of rich visuals. Sudeep Chatterjee's cinematography gave a life to the film. So, these things will take us to that time period for a lively experience. The editing work was done by Jayant Jadhar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Akiv Ali, which was really nice. The songs composed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali was not good in Tamil version, as the tamil lyrics doesn't gel well with the music. But, 'Ghoomar' song was nicely visualized. The background score was really superb. The tamil dubbing was very good.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a multi-talented person. I am really stunned with his fulfilled dedication towards this film. I have not watched his previous films. But still, he impressed me with his making style in this film. He really worked hard for this film to get a powerful output, and he did it. He gave proper detailing in every scene, and that's the reason for a complete grandeur experience. Madhan Karky's dialogues for the tamil version were so superb and easy to understand.
Screenplay Execution - In both the half, the screenplay travels in a dead slow pace and looks so lengthy in duration. In the first half, the film begins with a very good start and it traveled in a correct order for the proper establishment of the lead actors. After the marriage of Ratan-Padmaavati, the screenplay becomes intense and interesting at that point. Later on, the screenplay was intriguing from the pre-interval block to interval block. In the second half, the film traveled more on the main track and Deepika's characterisation got more stronger from there. Towards the climax, the intensity of the screenplay reached it's peak and it will make us to sit in the edge of the seat. The climax was amazing with a war sequence along with Padmaavat's Jauhar Sati.
Main Negatives - As the film travels in a very slow pace, some may feel uncomfortable with it. Because of it, they won't get the strong impact easily. The strong connect of the film with the audience was broken in some scenes, as the director treated it very lightly. The lyrics of the songs in the tamil version should have given some importance. Because, the songs of the original version had a great soul in it, which was missed in the tamil version. Except the climax, the 3D effects were not good and effective in many scenes. You will easily forgive these negligible flaws.
Verdict
'Padmaavat' is a great epic-period drama and it can said as 'One of the Best Historical Films' of Indian Cinema. The rich visuals were blended with proper detailing works, along with mindblowing performance of the lead actors. The film's impact will make us to forgive the flaws. So, it deserves a 'must watch once' in theatres for a complete grandeur experience.
Important Note - If you feel uncomfortable with the dubbed versions, watch it in the original version (Hindi) with subtitles. Don't watch the film with the mindset of commercial entertainment. You must really have great patience to get involved with the film completely. Else, you won't get the strong impact.
Cut Short Rating - 9/10
