Plot - Chanchala, an IAS officer, was in jail for the murder case of Asst.Commissioner's brother. The chief minister wants people's favourite politician Eshwar Prasad's fame to be damaged among the people. As she was the personal secretary of that politician, she comes under the custody of CBI officer Vaishnavi in an old palace. In the name of investigation, they try to collect some points from her, to set a trap for him. Meanwhile, Chanchala got possessed by Queen 'Bhaagamathie'. How these problems comes to an end forms the crux of the story.

'Bhaagamathie' is a bilingual film which was released simultaneously in both Tamil and Telugu.

Performance of the Star Cast - As usual, Anushka delivered a terrific performance and stole the show. Jayaram Sir had a good characterisation, where he scored well with a convincing performance. Asha Sarath played as a CBI Officer and she delivered her best in her portions. Unni Mukundan gave his best in the given space. The other actors had done their part well.

Technical Works - Madhie's cinematography enriches the entire art work of that palace very neatly, with his great visuals. Kotagiri Venkateshwara Rao's editing looked so sleek in some scenes, but at the same time it disturbed the continuity of some scenes. There was only one song in the film, which will bring a great relief to the audience. The background score by Thaman was excellent, as it highly elevates the horror sequences.

Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Ashok comes out of the usual horror forumula and he tried his level best to treat this genre in a different angle. In some scenes, he showed his brilliance. But on the other part, he mixed most of the usual elements and cliches in between. In some scenes, I felt that he focused more on convincing telugu audience. He didn't focus highly on the humour portions.

Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the director directly entered into the main track, with a good flow. Later on, the screenplay took some time to become intense. Towards the interval block, the screenplay becomes engaging. The interval block with the transformation of Anushka was superb. In the second half, some small lagging issue disturbs the flow. He took more time in giving a clear picture to the audience. The climax portion was filled with so much of twists, in which some of the twists were convincing.

Main Negatives of the Film - In a scene, a lip-sync issue took place, where the lip movement came only after the dialogue. Even though the director tried to handle it in a different manner, some scenes didn't create a great interest among the people. Some small deviations from the main track could have been avoided. The climax portion was so lengthy, as he dragged it beyond an extent. The usual treatment was also a small drawback, as it slows down our interest at a point.

Verdict
'Bhaagamathie' is an usual horror-thriller genre, which was tried to present it in a different angle. The director will make us convinced in some parts. Even though he didn't make it so interesting, the screenplay was not boring at all. So, it deserves a 'worth watchable once' for Anushka's performance and for a good horror experience.

Cut Short Rating - 6.8/10
