Plot - How Raja gets a friendship with local gangster Kaakamani and his son Saravanan, and why he became friends with them forms the crux of the story.
After 'Thirudan Police' film, Dinesh and Director Caarthick Raju joined hands once again for 'Ulkuthu'. The film finally released today after many delays.
Performance of the Star Cast - Dinesh delivered a solid performance and gave different variations in every emotional scenes. Nandita delivered her best in the given space. Bala Saravanan scored well with his humour content in many scenes and made his part convincing to the audience. Sharath Lohitashwa delivered his usual style of villainism. Dhilip Master gave his best in his portions. John Vijay and Chaya Singh played an cameo like role, but scored with their good performances.
Technical Works - P.K.Varma's cinematography work was nice, in which he beautifully shot the locations of that coastal area. Praveen's editing work was good. Justin Prabhakaran's background score gave good intensity in some scenes. 'Pesayum Esayum' and 'Kuru Kuru Kannala' songs were pleasant to hear.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Caarthick Raju has a talent in executing an usual plot in a different manner. He proved the same in this film too. The revenge drama is not a new one, but still he presented in a very good manner without any unnecessary elements into it. The importance given to the songs placement by him was really appreciable.
Screenplay Execution - In the beginning, the plot took more time to settle into the track. After the entry of villain, the screenplay gets into a new pace with some interesting elements into it. The action sequences were beautifully choreographed, especially those kabbadi scenes were superb. The interval block was good with an expected twist. In the second half, the flashback portion was so elongated one and created a lagging issue in the fast pace. So, it was a speed breaker in the film. Towards the climax, the director concentrated in the portions and he gave a good finishing touch.
Main Negatives - The fast pace in the first half was slowed down in the second half. This will make our interest towards the film low at a point. The flashback portion was good, but not convincing. If the director concentrated more on the second half, the film would have been more engaging.
Verdict
'Ulkuthu' is an usual revenge action drama which was presented in a very good manner. Except the flaws in the second half, the film will not make you feel bored. It deserves a 'worth watchable once' category for the nice performances and strong action sequences.
Cut Short Rating - 7.6/10
