Plot - Chotta, the most wanted terrorist escapes from the UP Jail and comes to Chennai, which is his next target to plant bombs in public places. Madhusudhanan tries to marry her lover against her brother's wish. Kuzhandhai Velu wants to take care of his wife during her pregnancy time. How these things get connected at a point and what happens next forms the crux of the story.
Gaurav Naryanan directed and acted in the films like Thoonganagaram and Sigaram Thodu. Udhayanidhi Stalin called and appreciated him for 'Sigaram Thodu' at that release time. This made them to join together for 'Ippadai Vellum' which released today. In this year, Udhayanidhi Stalin gave two rural based masala flicks 'Saravanan Irukka Bayamaen' and 'Podhuvaaga Emmanasu Thangam', which didn't impress the audience much after the strong impact of 'Manithan'. So, in this same year, he is back again with an action thriller 'Ippadai Vellum' and created a strong attention towards him in the trailer of the film. The casting of the film also looks promising.
After Manithan, Udhayanidhi Stalin really improved a lot and scored very well in his parts. He delivered a very good performance which really made convincing. Manjima Mohan also gave her best in her portions like, what she did in 'Achcham Yenbathu Madamaiyada'. She was not used just for a foreign song, but as an important character of the film. Soori's comedy was just with the flow of the storyline, which made us laugh little bit. But, the director made him to perform as a supporting character, in which he really done justice to that. Radhika Ma'am played as Udhayanidhi's mother and satisfied us with her usual performance. RK Suresh played as Manjima's brother and gave a good performance. Daniel Balaji played as the terrorist and stole the show with his usual baddie appearance. I appreciate Gaurav Narayanan for handling this script without giving importance to the songs except Kulebaa Vaa. He extracted good output from Udhayanidhi. D.Imman's background score was really good and added pulse to the engaging scenes. The cinematography work by Richard.M.Nathan was really superb which made the visuals so rich. The editing was also crisp and sharp. In the first half, the screenplay gets high intensity only after 30 mins. He took some time in introducing every lead characters of the film. The interlink, which the director made at a point with an interesting knot was superb. The interval block was a good one. In the second half, the director took some to get into the gripping factor. When he gets into that, the screenplay gets more intense and engaging without any unwanted disturbing elements to the flow of the storyline. Towards the ending, the director will really make us to sit in the edge of the seat. The climax was really good. Some logical blunders were there which will be clearly visible to us. The lagging issues was little bit trouble in between. The director sketched the character of Udhayanidhi Stalin, who believes more in using his brain for a clever attempt. But the cleverness of Udhayanidhi was seen only in some scenes. If the director utilized that more, the engaging factor will be at it's peak. These mistakes are negligible only. So, we won't get dissatisfied with the film. Because, the engaging factor is so strong in most of the parts, which will really make us fulfilled.
Verdict - 'Ippadai Vellum' has really won the battle in most of the parts. But, if the director concentrated in those minor mistakes, the film would have been more convincing. But still, it's a good thriller which really deserves must watch once category for Udhayanidhi's performance and Gaurav Narayanan's screenplay execution.
Cut Short Rating - 8/10
