Deepavali is always a special festival for us. When our favourite star's movie releasing grandly on that day, it makes that deepavali more special. In that way, Ilayathalapathy Vijay's Mersal made this deepavali more special. When we celebrated it as a normal deepavali, Vijay fans celebrated this deepavali as Mersal Deepavali. After so many hurdles, the release of Vijay's Mersal and it's ticket bookings was confirmed only at the eleventh hour. The teaser created some new records in Youtube platform. So, finally a Deepavali treat by Vijay and Atlee was given yesterday and received well among the Vijay fans. Ilayathalapathy Vijay established those three characters in his own style and scored well as a performer in 'Vetrimaaran' (a) 'Thalapathy' character. His energetic level was so superb and he stole the show just with his screen presence. We can say Nithya Menon is the only lead actress in this film. Because she was given more screen presence to perform in the film. The other actresses Kajal Agarwal and Samantha was not utilized well with the screenplay except songs. SJ Suryah delivered a good style of villainism, but still it can't match that 'Sudalai' character in 'Spyder'. Vadivelu Sir didn't make a laughter out loud performance but he gave his decent performance. Sathyaraj Sir just played a supporting role and gave his best. The intro scene of Vijay is very simple and had a reflection of Shankar's 'Shivaji'. The cinematography by GK Vishnu was very excellent. The visuals of 'Aalaporan Tamizhan' song was really amazing and gave a goosebumps moment. AR Rahman's Songs were good but still the background score worked out only in some scenes. The social messages in the film got a good response. The dialogues about Tamil language and culture was really good. The content of medical mafia was handled very properly. In the first half, the time taken to settle into the main plot was very high. After the title card, the screenplay was engaging in few parts. The mass screen presence by Ilayathalapathy Vijay saved in some portions. Except 'Aalaporan Tamizhan' song, the other songs were placed unnecessarily, which disturbs the flow. The interval block was superb with an expected twist. In the second half, the characterization of 'Vetri Maaran' gets introduced and made the film to follow in a right track. But the lengthy flashback of 'Vetri Maaran' made our interest low at an extent. The packaging of a commercial film with social issues and the emotions behind it was good. The cliches and regular templates used in it spoils the flow of the film. Director Atlee had written his screenplay with reflections of so many scenes from many Tamil movies and from some Hollywood movies too. The reflection of many movies worked out only in few parts and the predictability factor was very high. I wish Director Atlee to set a benchmark in Kollywood with his unique style of story and screenplay. The duration was so lengthy and some scenes could have been trimmed. Except these issues, this film is a decent Deepavali Family Entertainer and it's a perfect Deepavali Feast for Vijay Anna Fans.

Verdict - The film contains a good packaging of a commercial film but the repeated cliches and the reflections of many scenes made the film not as a fulfilled package. The fans will really get Mersalled moment in many scenes. On the whole, 'Mersal' is a Decent Deepavali Entertainer which deserves a must watch once for Ilayathalapathy Vijay.
