Plot - The success of Jallikattu makes Karuppan to marry Anbu, the sister of Maayi. This makes Kathir to go mad who loved Anbu since childhood. So, he plays a game to create a quarrel between Karuppan and Maayi family to fulfill his love. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Vijay Sethupathi, an only actor who gave back to back continous film previous year continuing the same streak this year too. After Kavan, Vikram Vedha and Puriyaatha Puthir, he is back again with a rural backdrop film in the end of September. His first two flicks did a great job in box office and also added in the blockbusters list of this year. The trailer of the film created a good expectations in which the Jallikattu scene was the biggest highlight in that. After Renigunda film, Director Paneerselvam making a re-entry to Kollywood with Vijay Sethupathi. Vijay Sethupathi carried the entire film in his shoulder and delivered a solid performance. He made us to enjoy his screen presence in every action, humor, romantic and emotional scene. 'Brindhavanam' Fame Tanya gave a very neat performance and her characterisation was good throughout the film. Bobby Simha delivered his decent style of villainism. Pasupathi who always appears and delivers his good perfomance, followed the same in this film. Singam Puli made us to laugh in some portions with his good humour. The plot is very usual one for a rural action family drama genre. In the beginning, Jallikattu scene was so realistic, and made a good impact among the audience. The chemistry between Vijay Sethpathi and Tanya worked out well. The bond between husband and wife was really shown in a good manner. The sentiments were handled properly which didn't make audience to feel bored of it. The screenplay execution was not a new one, but the engaging factor maintained a good interest of audience throughout the film. D.Imman, who is always best for a rural action storyline, scored well with his usual style of music. The predictability factor was very high, but it didn't affect the entire film. The cliches and templates needed for a rural flick was used in many portions. Two songs came as a speed breaker and spoils the flow with a unnecessary placement of it. There was no bang in the interval block. In most of the scenes, we can notice the reflections of Komban film. The second half took some time to settle into the plot. In some scenes, the screenplay falls flat. The villain characterisation could have been more stronger. The ending of the film was an usual one with a good action. Despite some flaws, this cliched plot doesn't make us feel boring.
Verdict - The plot is not new to us. We have watched many rural action flicks, but still it maintained a good feel with proper proportion of rural entertainer packaging. This rural action drama deserves a one-time watch. Go and enjoy this film with your family for the screen presence of Makkal Selvan.
