Plot - Aadhi (STR) belongs to a multi-millionaire family. He lives in abroad with his father and grandfather. His grandfather Raghunandan (Nasser) requests Aadhi to unite him with his daughter Nandini (Ramya Krishnan), who lives in Chennai without any contact with them. Nandini's love marriage is the main reason behind the separation of father and daughter. So, Aadhi comes to Chennai. He gets an opportunity to work as a car driver in his aunt Nandini's house. How Aadhi fulfills his grandfather's wish forms the crux of the story.
'Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven' is an official Tamil remake of 'Power Star' Pawan Kalyan's Blockbuster Telugu film 'Attarintiki Daredi', which released in the year 2013. STR plays the main lead of the film. This film has been directed by Sundar.C and produced by Lyca Productions.
Note - I haven't watched the original version 'Attarintiki Daredi'. So, I have written my review of 'Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven' without any comparison with it.
Performance of the Star Cast - STR delivers his convincing performance. He looks so stylish and cool in every frame. His fans will really enjoy his screen presence to the core. His dialogue delivery is really enjoyable, in which he relates his personal life and controversies in a humorous way. In the action sequences, his fans will get completely satisfied. In the climax portion, he emotes in a very good way. Megha Akash and Catherine Teresa plays an usual heroine role only. They have given their decent performance. Ramya Krishnan plays a crucial role, as the main plot revolves around her. She delivers her usual best performance, by justifying her character's emotions in a good way. Prabhu plays a supporting character role, in which he plays his part well. Yogi Babu is seen only in the second half. In the given space, he entertains the audience with his good humour. Robo Shankar and VTV Ganesh have contributed their best in the humour content, which works well in few major portions. Nasser has given his usual best. Mahat Raghavendra plays an extended cameo appearance. All the other actors have given their decent support, throughout the film.
Technical Works - Gopi Amarnath's cinematography work is really good, in which his visuals are so appealing. N.B.Srikanth's editing looks sleek and neat, in which his cuts doesn't have any abrupt finish. He helps to maintain the screenplay pace in a proper flow, in most of the portions. Hip Hop Tamizha's songs are good and impressive. The songs like 'Red Card-u', 'Vanga Machan Vanga', 'Paravaigal' and 'Onnukku Renda' are my favourites. His background score elevates the mass moments of STR and few sentiment portions, in a good way.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Sundar.C is always familiar for his commercial entertainer scripts. Likewise, he remade the most successful Telugu film 'Attarintiki Daredi'. As that film deals with humour and family emotions, he becomes more comfortable to direct this remake in his own style. He always gives much importance to humour content. In this film, his humour treatment doesn't give a complete satisfaction like his previous films. Still, he entertains the audience in a decent way. He tries to blend the family emotions in a convincing way. But, the family emotions has importance only in few parts. So, the emotional connect is not so stronger. His screenplay execution in both the half is not bad. Still, his presentation has few issues.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film begins with a decent start. STR's introduction scene is good and massive. From there, the screenplay takes some time to create a strong interest towards the film. Later, the screenplay maintains a good flow with a decent entertainment. In between, the screenplay doesn't look interesting. The pre-interval block is not bad. The interval block deals with an emotional conversation instead of STR's usual mass action. Still, it doesn't look bad. In the second half, the film takes time to get into the entertaining flow. At a point, the entertainment factor gets stronger. From there, the screenplay has been maintained in a good way. In between, the humour content provides us a laughter experience. Towards the climax portion, the screenplay becomes engaging, with a small action sequence. The climax portion deals with emotions completely, which works well. So, the ending convinces the audience.
Main Negatives of the Film - The songs like 'Red Card-u', 'Modern Muniyamma' and 'Onnukku Renda' looks completely unnecessary. Because, it comes as a speed-breaker only. In few portions, the screenplay gives us a lengthy feel. The logical errors are as usual common in Sundar.C's movies. We can expect the same in this film too. When compared to the second half, the entertaining factor doesn't look convincing in the first half. The antagonists should have been treated either in a serious or humourous way. As Sundar.C treats in both the ways, the negative characters becomes weaker at a point. In few parts, Sundar.C's usual style goes missing. Apart from the beginning, interval and end, the family emotions doesn't get stronger importance in the remaining portion. So, the emotional connect is also partial only.
Verdict
'Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven' is an average commercial entertainer from Sundar.C. STR's massive performance entertains his fans to the core. His emotional act in the climax is really good. The director tries to balance the humour content and family emotions in a convincing way. But, it works well only in selected portions. The screenplay execution in the first half could have been better. In the second half, the screenplay provides us a decent entertainment. So, the audience comes out of the theatre with partial satisfaction. This film deserves 'watchable once' category for STR's screen presence and also for a decent entertainment with your family. The family audience will like the emotional treatment. Do watch it in theatres without much expectations.
