Plot - Anjanam Azhagiya Pillai (SJ Suryah) is a person, who doesn't even harm any animal or insect. He works in Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. When he shifts to a new house, a rat gives more troubles to him. Because of that rat, he gets very disturbed. How he gets rid of that rat forms the crux of the story.

Positives
SJ Suryah delivers a solid performance, by justifying his character perfectly in all aspects. His character has an innocent shade, which works very well in the required portions. When fighting with that rat, his expressions are funny and impressive. Along with that rat, he steals the show easily. Priya Bhavani Shankar looks pretty in every frame. She delivers a convincing performance. Her role is not used just for the romance interest. The chemistry between SJ Suryah and Priya Bhavani Shankar looks decent. Karunakaran comes as good support for SJ Suryah throughout the film. His one-liners are enjoyable. The rat character will easily attract the kids. The mischievous and the intelligence nature of that character is the major reason behind the good & decent humour content. All the other actors have done their part well. Gokul Benoy's cinematography is really excellent. His camera angle to show the perspective & movement of that rat is very good. Apart from that, his visuals are so pleasing. V.J.Sabu Joseph's editing looks sharp and sleek, which maintains the screenplay flow in a good way. Justin Prabhakaran's songs are good. The songs like 'Anthi Maalai Neram', 'Tabakkunu' and 'Theera Kadhal' are really impressive. His background score elevates the major humour portions. The theme music for 'Monster' (Rat) is superb. Director Nelson Venkatesan has taken a small and simple concept, in which he presents it in an entertaining way. He has focussed only on the content. He gives importance to the romance track between SJ Suryah - Priya Bhavani Shankar with certain limits. He links it with the main content, which makes Priya Bhavani Shankar's character to get an extra space. The writing of the two lead characters 'Anjanam Azhagiya Pillai' and 'Monster' (Rat) is stronger. Whenever SJ Suryah tries an attempt to set a trap for that rat, it gives checkmate to SJ Suryah with a smart move, which looks convincing. The situations in the film make a good connect, where we might have faced such problems because of a rat in our life. He doesn't make the audience to get the boring feel. His screenplay execution is not bad. In the first half, the screenplay slowly starts to grab the audience's attention after the entry of 'Monster' (Rat). Till the interval, the fun element has been maintained decently. The interval block (also the 'Title Card') creates a small expectation for the second half. In the second half, the fun element moves to the next level and provides complete entertainment. The climax portion is good, which has a few emotional moments. Those emotional moments are really convincing, in which the director conveys a small message. The kids will really enjoy the film from the beginning to the end.

Negatives
As usual, logical questioning arises in between. Few of them may feel the content as a silly one, without properly involving in the humour content. The screenplay moves in a predictable way in some major portions. When compared to the second half, the fun factor in the first half is at a low rate only. The film will really take some time to make a strong connect. For some people, the film will make a connect with them either at the moment of Monster's entry or from the mid of the first half. For some people, the film will make a connect with them completely in the second half. Still, the director's treatment doesn't create a boring feel. There is a small negative character, which has been introduced to make this battle more interesting. At the beginning of the second half, that character gets some importance. But, the way the director puts an end to that character is simple only. Other than these, there are no other issues in the screenplay execution.

Verdict
'Monster' is a good and decent comedy entertainer from the director Nelson Venkatesan. The battle between SJ Suryah and that rat provides fun to the audience. Especially, those portions will be loved by the kids. In the first half, the screenplay execution is not bad. In the second half, the screenplay execution provides good entertainment. The flaws are negligible only. The climax portion will be liked by everyone. You will come out of the theatre with good satisfaction. So, this film deserves 'worth watchable once' category for SJ Suryah's performance and also for the rat's mischievous moments. Watch it in theatres with your family, especially kids.
