Plot - Prabha (Laghubaran) and his gang kidnap a boy, to demand a lump ransom from their parents. Kathiresan (Kathir), a police officer deals this case. He saves that boy and kills one of the gang members. So, Prabha decides to take revenge on Kathir and his family, for the loss of his gang member. Did Kathiresan saves his family from Prabha forms the crux of the story.
Positives
Kathir delivers a splendid performance, by completely justifying the cop character in a perfect way. He reacts very well with respect to the situation. He steals the show in the portions, where he deals the antagonist tactically. 'Raattinam' fame Laghubaran plays the main antagonist role. His character has been written in a very stronger way. He delivers a neat performance, by giving a great tough to Kathir. The cat and mouse game between them is a great highlight in the film. Suja Varunee's character gets importance from the pre-climax portion, in which she has given her best. Srushti Dange comes as a lover of Kathir in the film. Even though her space is less, she plays her part decently. Galatta Guru, 'Aruvi' Balaji and the other two actors (unable to get their name) are the gang members of Laghubaran in the film. They have given their best. All the other actors have done their part very well. Mahesh Muthuswami's cinematography is really good, in both the day and night portions. Prasanna GK's editing work looks crisp. He helps to maintain the screenplay pace in the right way. Amrish's songs are good, but only 'Acham Neeki' song (in the end credits) and 'Sathru Theme' has been used in the film. The remaining two romantic tracks have not been placed in the film. So, the film doesn't allow the romance of Kathir - Srushti Dange in between the serious issue, which is a great plus. Surya Prasadh has composed a good background score in most of the crucial portions. Director Naveen Nanjundan has selected a usual cop story only. Even the conflict is also simple only. But, his presentation creates a strong interest. Without any unnecessary elements, he establishes a threat through Laghuabaran character and proceeds the next step of how Kathir is gonna tackle it. His brilliant techniques, framed for both the protagonist and the antagonist looks good. He has given his complete best in the screenplay execution, to not make the audience easily diverted from the film. Through the cat and mouse game between Kathir and Laghubaran, his screenplay looks engaging. In both the half, the screenplay creates a strong interest from a point and it gets maintained till the end. The interval point is good. The climax is usual only, yet convincing.
Negatives
The logical loopholes are seen in many portions of the film. The making of the film could have been a little bit better. Prasanna GK's cuts have an abrupt finish in one or two scenes. The predictability factor plays a small game in between. The sound mixing has some issues, in which the film looks very noisy in most of the portions. I watched in a theatre with a good surround system only still, the voices and other sounds have a loud tone. Some over-buildups are seen a little bit. Few flaws are here and there. Still, the film will engage us decently.
Verdict
'Sathru' is really a very good cop thriller, in which the performance of Kathir and Laghubaran stays very strong. The director's presentation looks interesting. His screen execution in both the half looks engaging. Even though there are some flaws, the director will not disappoint us. We will come out of the theatre with good satisfaction. So, this film deserves 'must watch once' category for Kathir - Laghubaran performance and also for the director's engaging screenplay. Watch it in theatres with your family and friends.
Cut Short Rating - 8.4/10
