Plot - Yamuna (Nayanthara) works in the media field. Due to her parents' pressure on the marriage, she goes to Pollachi to live with her grandmother. Along with her grandmother and Mani (Yogi Babu), she creates 'Fake Ghost' videos which get trended on Youtube. Later, she gets disturbed by a real ghost 'Bhavani' (Nayanthara). Why Bhavani tries to take revenge on Yamuna forms the crux of the story.
Positives
Nayanthara delivers a solid performance, by justifying the dual roles perfectly. In 'Yamuna' character, we can see only a usual 'Nayanthara'. But, in 'Bhavani' character a different shade of 'Nayanthara' is seen. And, she has given life to 'Bhavani' character through her strong emotions. So, 'Bhavani' character will get strongly registered in our mind. Kalaiarasan delivers a neat performance, by playing his character 'Amudhan' in a convincing way. The chemistry between Nayanthara and Kalaiarasan works decently. Yogi Babu, Kulappulli Leela and Master Ashwanth have done their part well. The teenage portion of Bhavani - Amudhan have been played by Gabrella and Maathevan. In the given space, they both have delivered their convincing performance. All the other actors have given their decent support throughout the film. Sudarshan Srinivasan's cinematography work is excellent, which suits well with the horror genre. Karthik Jogesh's editing work looks good, by maintaining a proper flow for present and flashback portions. KS Sundaramurthy's songs are so good. 'Megathoodham' song is so pleasant to hear, in which the visuals of it also attracts easily. His background score is impressive in most of the portions. Priyanka Ravindran's story is not a new one. But, she tries to differentiate it through the presentation. There will be variation in color tone, used to represent the present and flashback portion. The concept of 'Butterfly Effect' has been used in the film. It has been justified in many major portions of the film. Director Sarjun KM has contributed his complete best. The writing of 'Bhavani' and 'Amudhan' characters have great depth. This is the main reason behind our connect with the flashback portion. In the first half, the screenplay execution works in parts. The interval block is not bad. In the second half, the screenplay execution looks convincing.
Negatives
The screenplay execution in the first half should have been better. Even though the film begins with a good start, the screenplay takes much time in creating a strong interest. The writing of 'Yamuna' character is not so convincing like 'Bhavani' character. So, Nayanthara fans will get impressed completely with 'Bhavani' character. The screenplay pace is maintained slow only. But, it tests patience in a few parts. So, a few people may feel the film as lengthy. The presentation of 'Fake Ghost videos' could have a little bit better. In one or two scenes, the editing looks non-sync. Some logical questioning arises in between. The second half looks convincing because of the flashback portion. But, the climax portion looks usual and predictable. So, most of them will not get satisfied with the climax. So, the concept of 'Butterfly Effect' looks partially good. Even though the horror elements works well in the beginning, our interest shown for it also gets reduced at a point. Just because of these, the film will not satisfy the expectations of the audience completely, created by the teaser and the trailer of the film.
Verdict
'Airaa' is neither too good nor too bad. The screenplay execution looks good in the second half. In the first half, the screenplay lacks some interesting elements. If they had concentrated on the above-mentioned flaws, this horror thriller would have been more convincing. Even though the screenplay execution may or may not disappoint you, you will really get convinced with the performance of Nayanthara and Kalaiarasan. 'Bhavani' character will somehow make a good connect with you. So, the film deserves a 'decent one-time watchable' category for the performance of the Nayanthara and Kalaiarasan. Without much expectations, watch it with your family and friends in theatres.
