Positives
Karthi delivers a neat performance, by scoring well in both romantic and emotional sequences. Rakul Preet Singh delivers a convincing performance, in which her character gets a major importance. The chemistry between Karthi and Rakul Preet is really superb. RJ Vigneshkanth, Amrutha, Prakash Raj and Ramya Krishnan have played their supporting character roles very well. R.Velraj's cinematography work is really excellent. As the film travels in many different locations (both India and abroad), he easily attracts us through his nice visuals. Ruben's editing work looks sleek. Harris Jeyaraj's songs are not bad. His background score looks good in romantic portions. Director Rajath Ravishankar takes an usual romantic plot, by adding adventure as a small element into it. He gives importance to adventure element in the beginning and the end. Along with romance, he also gives space to friendship and family emotions. He has tried his level best to balance these elements properly. His screenplay execution is really enjoyable in the first half. In the second half, he visualized the romantic portions in a very good way. Even though the climax is usual, it gives us a decent feel.
Negatives
The director tries to differentiate this romantic entertainer through adventure element. But, it doesn't work big just because of the normal treatment. The director should have concentrated more on adventure element. As his presentation looks simple, the screenplay moves in a very predictable way only. In few portions, the film looks little bit artificial. Even though he tries to balance different emotions, it works partially only. In the second half, his romantic treatment will not convince few people. Some scenes has been treated in Gautham Vasudev Menon's style. The VFX shots for Mount Everest portions could have been better. When compared to other songs, 'Anangae' song comes as a speed breaker only. The duration of the film looks lengthy. Just because of this flaws, the engaging factor is not so stronger.
Verdict
'Dev' is an usual romantic entertainer, in which the director differentiates it through adventure element slightly. His screenplay execution in the first half provides a good entertainment. In the second half, the screenplay execution is not upto the mark, due to simple treatment. So, the film will not provide us a complete satisfaction. Still, the film doesn't make us to get bored with the romance. This film deserves 'worth watchable once' category for Karthi's convincing performance. Watch the film with low expectations, for a decent time pass.
