Plot - 'Merku Thodarchi Malai' is all about the day-to-day life of people, who lives in the Western Ghats.

'Merku Thodarchi Malai' is a drama directed by Lenin Bharathi. The film doesn't have a familiar star cast, but the content makes it to get recognition in many International Film Festivals. This film has been produced by Vijay Sethupathi under 'Vijay Sethupathi Productions'. 'Music Maestro' Ilayaraja has composed songs and background score for this film. It is a sincere dedication to 'landless labour' all over the world.

Performance of the Star Cast - The entire star cast really deserves a great appreciation for delivering such a realistic performance. Instead of acting, they really lives as that character in every frame. Through their slang, we are able to feel the nativity of Western Ghats. This makes the director to get a very good output, for what he expected.

Technical Works - Theni Eashwar's cinematography is the biggest plus, in which his visuals gives a lively feel of 'Western Ghats' to us. Through many 'Zoom Out' shots, we are able to feel the natural beauty of 'Western Ghats'. Mu.Kasi Vishwanathan's editing is simple only. But, his cuts looks very sleek and neat. 'Maestro' Ilayaraja's songs comes as a small part in the second half. Wherever background score needs, he gives there and conveys the mood of the situation through pleasant music.

Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Lenin Bharathi really deserves a special place in Kollywood. His direction is really amazing and his complete effort is seen throughout the film. Without adding any commercial value, he shows the life of those people in a very realistic way. Their sentiments and emotions have been shown very strongly. With a very good cast and crew, he conveys the content decently, what he tried to say about them. This is the main reason for this film to get good recognition in many International Film Festivals. In between, he places some mild humour to make the audience enjoy little bit. Vijay Sethupathi is also to be appreciated for showing the support to this film, by producing it.

Screenplay Execution - In both the half, the screenplay pace is slow only to bring that realistic feel. So, the patience must be there for audience to get connected with it. In the first half, the introduction of characters takes place one by one. With that introduction, the film gives a clear picture of the role that they are gonna play. Towards the interval, the screenplay becomes little bit serious. The interval point is simple only, but it's a decent one. In the second half, the film is focused on the life of 'Rangasamy' character. In between, the life of other characters has been shown. Towards the climax, the reality factor gets stronger to highlight the game played on those people. The climax is good, in which a hard-hitting message regarding them has been registered.

Main Negatives of the Film - This is completely dependent upon the mindset of audience. As the film doesn't have any commercial treatment, the patience is compulsory for the audience to get connected with the film. Those who doesn't have patience will get boring feel only.

Verdict
'Merku Thodarchi Malai' is really a sincere attempt from Lenin Bharathi to dedicate a film for 'Landless Labour'. The cinematography adds beauty to the film, by showing the lively nature of 'Western Ghats'. This film can be said as one of the best films in Indian Cinema. It will be really a great inspiration for upcoming directors. If you love to watch films without commercial angle, you will really love this film to the core. So, watch the film without the mindset of commercial entertainment.
