Plot - Kokila (Nayanthara) needs some large amount to do operation for her mother, to get completely cured from lung cancer. After several attempts, the situation makes her to involve in smuggling of drugs. When she tries to come out of the smuggling gang, what are all the problems she faces and what happens next forms the crux of the story.
'Kolamaavu Kokila' is a women-centric comedy thriller directed by Nelson. In this film, Nayanthara plays the main lead. The trailer of the film increases the expectations as the content looks something unique. After getting postponed from 10th August, this film finally hits the screens yesterday.
Performance of the Star Cast - Nayanthara comes as the girl next door role, in which she looks very simple. Her characterisation looks like a redefined version of 'Kathambari' character from 'Naanum Rowdy Thaan' film. She delivers an outstanding performance, in which she shows her brilliant act through the innocence. With that innocence, her character gets so strong around the conflict and it makes the plot gripping. Yogi Babu as usual scores well with his timing comedy, which gets a good response from the audience. 'Black Sheep' Anbu Thaasan comes as a support for Yogi Babu in few humour portions. He has given his best. Saranya Ponvannan, VJ Jacqueline and RS Shivaji plays as the family members of Nayanthara in the film. They have given their full support to Nayanthara throughout the film. Charles Vinoth, Arun Alexander, Hareesh Peradi, Saravanan and Motta Rajendran gives good justification to their characters. All the other actors have done their part very well.
Technical Works - Sivakumar Vijayan's cinematography is really good, in which his visuals adds beauty to the normal locations. Nirmal's editing is good, in which his cuts looks sharp and sleek. Anirudh's songs are as usual good, in which 'Kalyana Vayasu' and 'Edhu Varaiyo' songs are my favourite. 'Kabiskabaa' tone looks good in some scenes. His background score travels well with the mood of the film.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Nelson has to be appreciated for presenting this simple and mundane script in a very refreshing way. He really frames the character of Nayanthara in a very beautiful manner. He plays a smart move with innocence in that 'Kokila' character in many scenes. He has given importance only to the needs of the plot. He makes the black-comedy treatment to be in an entertaining way, which works well in most of the portions. His screenplay execution doesn't look usual. Along with 'Nayanthara', the actors who plays as the family members of Nayanthara gets a good scope in the second half. This makes the audience completely to feel like a family entertainer.
Screenplay Execution - In both the half, the screenplay pace is neither slow nor racy. In the first half, the film opens with a decent start by giving a small touch about the smuggling gang. After that, the film completely focuses on Nayanthara's life. In between, Yogi Babu's comedy portions helps to entertains the audience for a small extent. Later, the screenplay travels in a sad tone. After few minutes, the screenplay becomes engaging. Towards the interval, the smuggling concept gets an interesting angle. The interval block is really ultimate. In the second half, the screenplay takes time to settle into the main conflict. Then, the film moves in a very entertaining and gripping way. Even though the film travels with the black-comedy tone, it really entertains and creates a good laughter experience. Towards the climax, the film maintains a very good flow. The climax looks simple only. Still, it looks very convincing. The finishing touch by the director to justify the title is good.
Main Negatives of the Film - The director doesn't give importance to any unnecessary elements. But still, he slightly drags the smuggling content to make a way for good entertainment. It helps the entertaining factor to work well. Still, the dragging in few parts could have been avoided. In two or three scenes, the director doesn't give a clarity. Even though the climax looks convincing, some may find the simple ending as a small disappointment. Other than that, the film doesn't make us feel bored with the content.
Verdict
'Kolamaavu Kokila' is a very good comedy thriller, in which Nayanthara's outstanding performance is the biggest plus. Along with that, Nelson's neat presentation and Yogi Babu - Anbu humour portions helps the film to move in both engaging and entertaining way. Some minor flaws in the second half could have been avoided. This film deserves 'must watch once' for the strong performance of the star cast and also for the director's unusual treatment. Watch the film with your family and friends for a complete entertainment.
