Plot - Samayan (Vasumithra) runs a grocery store in a small town. Due to a quarrel, his wife goes to her father's house. He stays alone in his house. Meanwhile, an unknown person (Sasikumar) gives him a great torture before taking revenge. What's the motive behind his revenge forms the crux of the story.
Performance of the Star Cast - Sasikumar is completely seen in a different avatar in this film. In his previous films, the dialogue delivery plays a biggest part in Sasikumar's performance. Sasikumar plays as a silent guy with very few dialogues in this film. He delivers a solid performance through his anger expressions and he steals the show in the action sequences. Vasumithra doesn't come as an usual villain. He delivers a very good performance. Nandita Shwetha's characterisation has an importance only in the second half. She delivers a convincing performance in the given space. Baby Avaika gives her best in the flashback portion. The supporting characters like Namo Narayana, Srijith Ravi, Raja Simman, Chella Muthaiah and Sheela Rajkumar have done their part well.
Technical Works - S.R.Kathir's cinematography is really amazing. Especially, his camera work in the night scenes gives us a good clarity in the dark. R.Govindaraj's editing looks sharp and sleek in the action sequences. Other than that, he makes way for the entire scene to complete the progress. This makes the screenplay to maintain in a slow pace. Govind Vasantha composes only three songs for this film. All the songs are so good. Especially, 'Raththa Aarathi' and 'Alathi Anbe' creates a good impression. His background score is really superb, which helps to elevate the action sequences.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director M Maruthupandian has not taken a very different revenge storyline. But, the treatment for this revenge drama is completely different. He doesn't give importance to unnecessary commercial elements, which is the biggest plus. The characterisation of Vasumithra is not written in a weaker manner. According to the situation, the director makes him to react for the hero's revenge. In the flashback, he adds a current social issue as a key to the revenge. He builds up the suspense from scene to scene. But, his slow screenplay tests the patience level for some set of audience.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with a good start by entering into the plot from the first scene itself. From that point, the suspense graph goes on increasing. Sasikumar's action sequences increases the intensity. In between, some situational humour makes us to laugh. The hero's torture for the villain is framed with some violent acts. The interval block is good. In the second half, the film initially takes some time to settle. The action sequence in the lodge creates an interest. Then the screenplay moves towards the flashback portion to reveal the reason. After that, the climax ends in an usual and convincing way.
Main Negatives of the Film - The logical errors can be seen in many scenes, which can be neglected. The family audience and Sasikumar fans comes with an expectation of commercial treatment in this revenge storyline. As the director's treatment is completely opposite to their expectations, they may come out of the theatre with a partial satisfaction. This makes the audience to have mixed feelings. The audience who loves different treatment will like this film .
Verdict
'Asuravadham' is a good action drama, in which the different treatment for the revenge storyline looks superb. The audience, who watches with the mindset of commercial entertainment will get disappointed. Other than that, the film doesn't have any issue. So, this film deserves 'worth watchable once' for the different avatar of Sasikumar and also for the good treatment of revenge plot.
Note - If you are comfort with this different treatment of revenge, you will love this film. Some family audience will feel comfort with this film. Don't watch with the mindset of commercial entertainment.
