Plot - Kuzhanthai is in a situation to finish his marriage within 3 months. When searching for bride, he gets rejected by some girls. After that, he tries to wedlock with Magizhini. How Kuzhanthai marries Magizhini among some obstacles forms the crux of the story.
'Sema' is a commercial entertainer directed by Valliganth. This film is produced by Director Pandiraj, under his production house 'Pasanga Productions'. He has also written dialogues for this film. After several delays, the film finally arrives in theatres today.
Performance of the Star Cast - GV Prakash Kumar delivers his usual performance and he gives a good justification for his character. Arthana Binu looks pretty and cute in every frame. She gives her best in her portions. As usual, Yogi Babu scores well in the humour portions and he keeps entertaining the audience with superb one-liners. Jana makes a debut in Kollywood, by playing a negative shade. His characterisation has a great hype in the beginning, but it goes weak in the second half. Still, he justifies his character in a good manner. Kovai Sarala, Mansoor Ali Khan and Sujatha Sivakumar have done their part very well, and they stands strong with the humour content.
Technical Works - Vivek Anand's cinematography is really superb, which gives a good lively nature for the rural backdrop. Pradeep E Ragav's editing is good, with crisp cuts. In some portions, his editing gives a feel of abrupt finish slightly. GV Prakash Kumar gives his usual best in the songs. 'Sandalee' and 'Uruttu Kannala' songs attains a great attraction. His background score is not so superb, but it looks good in parts.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Valliganth makes a decent debut in Kollywood, by taking the commercial entertainer script. In many interviews, he said that the film is just to entertain the audience with good humour. Like he said, he justifies that in a good manner, by making a strong foundation for the humour content. The storyline is very usual only, but still he presents it decently without making the content bored. In the second half, he treats the serious conflict in a humourous way. It works well in many scenes.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with an usual treatment. GV Prakash's intro dialogue suits well with the present situation of TN. From there, the film takes time initially to set into the core of the plot. Later, the film makes the audience engaging with good humour content. The interval block looks usual and it's an expected one. In the second half, the film takes some time to get into the entertaining track. After 'Sandalee' song, the screenplay gets into the main track. From there, the film entertains the audience till the end. The climax of the film is also an expected one, still it's convincing. A small twist in the end credits is good.
Main Negatives of the Film - As the film's storyline is usual, we can see some cliches here and there. So, the film moves in a predictable flow. The mother sentiment portions between GV Prakash and Sujatha Sivakumar could have been more stronger. In the second half, the film has some lagging issues. But, these flaws are negligible only because of the strong humour content.
Verdict
'Sema' is not so 'Sema'. It is a good commercial entertainer, in which the humour makes a good platform for the entertainment factor. The storyline is usual only. Still, the director makes a good comfort for the audience, through Yogi Babu's comedy tracks. So, the film deserves a 'worth-watchable once' for the strong humour content. The family audience will like this film. Watch the film with low-expectations.
Cut Short Rating - 7.2/10
