'Mahanati' is a biopic drama directed by Nag Ashwin of 'Yevade Subramanyam' fame. The film is all about the life history of legendary actress Savitri. In this film, Keerthy Suresh plays as 'Nadigaiyar Thilagam' Savitri and Dulquer Salman as 'Kadhal Mannan' Gemini Ganeshan. The film released in Tamil(Dubbed) as 'Nadigaiyar Thilagam' on this friday.
Performance of the Star Cast - Keerthy Suresh really deserves a great appreciation for giving a complete justification to 'Savitri' role, in every frame. She gets an opportunity to prove herself as a good actress. Her dedication to bring out the exact replica of 'Savitri' in the film is really superb. Dulquer Salman shines well as 'Gemini Ganeshan' and the role is so apt for him. His romantic expressions are really nice. Samantha Akkineni plays a reporter, with stammering issue. She delivers a neat performance to that character. Vijay Deverakonda plays his part well. Shalini Pandey and Malavika Nair gives her best in the small space given to them. Naga Chaitanya, Prakash Raj, Rajendra Prasad, Bhanupriya and Tanikella Bharani have done their job very well.
Technical Works - Dani Sanchez-Lopez's cinematography is really amazing, as he gives two different tones to differentiate the life of Savitri and the research of reporter Maduravani. His work is also reason for making a good connectivity with the audience. Kotagiri Venkateshwara Rao's editing is really superb, in which his cuts gives a good clarity to the plot. Mickey J Meyer's songs gives a good classic feel, with some good tunes. Especially, 'Mahanati' song gives a goosebumps feel. His background score makes a good emotional connect. The art department have done a wonderful job, by making the film so realistic. Madhan Karky's dialogues in Tamil are so good. Tamil Dubbing looks fine, still it could have been better in some scenes.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Nag Ashwin gives his complete input to this biopic drama, which we can see in every scene of the film. He has to be appreciated for his dedication. He makes the entire audience to travel in that period, with a strong connect. He just follows the exact history of Savitri without making any big changes for the film experience. He shares about both the ups and downs in the life of Savitri. This is the strongest reason to make a good bonding between the film and the audience. So, we are able to get a good retro experience.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens from the Savitri's bedridden scene. After that, the film travels from the present (80's) to the life of Savitri. From there, the screenplay of the film gets transformed from the Savitri's childhood to teenage. In between, some humour portions gives a good feel. Slowly, the film makes a good platform to create an interest among the audience and it ends with a decent interval block. In the second half, the film gets a scope to show why Savitri is everyone's favourite actress. Slowly, the film steps into the tragic side of Savitri. From there, we are able to know why Savitri becomes alcoholic. Then the film travels towards the end of Savitri's life with strong emotions.
Main Negatives of the Film - The screenplay is slow only to convey the emotions strongly, which is the reason for the lengthier duration. Because of this issue, we must have enough patience to travel with the film. In between, the importance given for Samantha-Vijay Deverakonda love portions could have been trimmed. Other than that, we can't find any big flaws in this biopic drama.
