Plot - Hari and Eshwaran are best friends. Hari loves Gayathri. Eshwaran loves Revathi. How some issues play a game in their love life and what happens next forms the crux of the story.

'Kaalakkoothu' is an action-romance drama directed by Naga Rajan. In this film, Kalaiarasan and Prasanna plays the lead roles. Sai Dhanshika pairs up with Kalaiarasan and Srushti Dange pairs up with Prasanna.

Performance of the Star Cast - Kalaiarasan delivers his usual cool performance. Prasanna delivers a solid performance and he gets more space to perform than Kalaiarasan. Sai Dhanshika delivers her usual performance. She emotes very well in some scenes. Srushti Dange delivers a cute performance and she has given a good justification to her character. All the other actors have done their part well.

Technical Works - PV Shankar's cinematogrpahy adds a beauty to the locations shot in Madurai. His visuals gives a good feel to the film. Selva RK's editing could have been more better. Some of his edits looks like a abrupt finish. Justin Prabhakaran's songs gives an usual pleasant feel. 'Netri Kungumam' and 'Kanna Katti' songs are impressive. His background score sounds fine in some parts.

Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Naga Rajan makes a debut in Kollywood by taking the action-romance drama. He gives more importance to the romance portions, when compared to action sequences. He treats this subject in a very usual way and that's why the screenplay moves in a predictable flow. He should have tried something interesting elements into the subject. Many scenes reminds us of some Tamil movies, related to this genre. As the action is very less, his direction doesn't create great attention towards the film. The message he tries to convey to the audience is good, but still he should have focused more to create a strong impact. The performance of the star cast only creates a small interest towards the film.

Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with the childhood days of Kalaiarasan and Prasanna, and explanation of how their friendship builds. After 10 minutes, the film comes to the present life of Kalai and Prasanna. Later the entire first half focuses completely on the romantic moments between those two couples. In between, few romantic portions brings a small smile. The interval point doesn't create a high impact and it's easily predictable only. In the second half, the film once again moves in a predictable flow. The main conflict comes in the climax portion only. The climax of the film is slightly convincing, just because of the performance of the lead characters.

Main Negatives of the Film - The main issue in the film is the high level of predictability. The director should have done something to solve the predictability issue by keeping an interesting screenplay. But, the screenplay looks convincing only in few parts. He has a great space to play with the conflict in the second half. But, he gives a space for it, only in the climax. When coming out of the theatre, we will come with some disappointments. The performance of the actors only saves the film partially.

Verdict
'Kaalakkoothu' is an average action-romance drama, in which the very usual treatment and the predictability factor makes the audience unconvinced with the subject. The screenplay is not upto the mark, as there are no any interesting elements. So, this film deserves a 'watchable once' for the convincing performance of the star cast.

Cut Short Rating - 5.8/10
