Plot - Dev Kaushal comes to know about his wife's secret relationship with Ranjit Arora. He blackmails that man, by demanding some money to pay his due amount. How the same blackmail gives him different troubles forms the crux of the story.
Performance of the Star Cast - Irrfan Khan delivers his usual best performance and his act gels well with the situation. Arunoday Singh delivers a neat performance and he gives a good justification for that 'secret-lover' role. Kirti Kulhari and Divya Dutta shares their best screen presence in the given space, with a good performance. Anuja Sathe, Omi Vaidya, Pradhuman Singh and Gajraj Rao gives their best in their portions.
Technical Works - Jay Oza's cinematography looks nice, with some good visuals. Huzefa Lokhandwala's editing gives a good clarity for the 'blackmail' concept without getting into the confusion state. Amit Trivedi scores well with his background score in some scenes. 'Badla' song looks like a good one in the film.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Abhinay Deo is already known for his famous black-comedy hit 'Delhi-Belly'. In this film, he handles the simple 'blackmail' concept with a good making and presentation. The humour content also works well. His screenplay execution is the biggest plus. He focuses mainly on the plot, but he could have avoided some lags in between. Those lagging issues comes as a speed-breaker in the film.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film opens with the introduction about the life of Irrfan Khan. After few minutes, the film steps directly into the plot. From there, it slowly gets into the gripping factor. Till the interval block, the film maintains on the right track. In the second half, the film takes some time to get into the usual flow. Towards the climax, the screenplay creates a curiosity. The climax is really a convincing one.
Main Negatives of the Film - The slow screenplay is maintained in the film, which tests our patience in few scenes. 'Befawa Song' looks like an unnecessary one. In few scenes, I felt that the clarity is missing there. In the second half, the lagging issues takes place in few parts. Except these negligible flaws, the film makes us convinced through an interesting and gripping presentation.
Verdict
'Blackmail' is a very good black-comedy drama, in which the strong performance and neat execution stays strong with the content. Still, those flaws could have been avoided. But, the film doesn't gives any bored feel. So, this film deserves 'worth-watchable once' category for the interesting and gripping screenplay to this simple plot.
