Plot - Amay Patnaik is an Income Tax officer. With the help of an unknown informer, he goes to Rameshwar's bungalow to raid with his team. How he digs out all of his black money from the bungalow amidst Rameshwar's play forms the crux of the story.
The film's storyline is based on a true story of the longest raid in Lucknow, which happened in the year 1981.
Performance of the Star Cast - Ajay Devgn delivers a solid performance by giving a great justification for his role. He apts well for that IT officer role. Ileana D'Cruz gives her best in the given space. Saurabh Shukla delivers an outstanding performance and he gives a tough competition to Ajay to gain audience's attraction towards his role. All the other actors in the film stands strong with the film, by justifying their roles properly.
Technical Works - Alphonse Roy's cinematography is nice, which perfectly syncs with 80's background. Bodhadityaa Banerjee's editing looks good with sharp and clear cuts. Amit Trivedi and Tanishk Baghchi shares their best in the songs. Amit's background score helps in elevating the raid sequences. 'Black' song gives us a goosebumps moment.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Raj Kumar Gupta is known for his film 'No One Killed Jessica'. Now he comes up with a periodic based drama thriller, in which he deals with one of the important IT raids in 80's. The less importance to the romance track between Ajay and Ileana is an appreciable one. We have seen raid scenes in many films, just as a small part. Here, the film completely focuses on the raid, which is the major plot. The process of raid is shown very realistic. The proper detailing is given.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the film focuses on the life of Ajay Devgn for few minutes. Later on, the screenplay steps into the engaging factor slowly. From the raid sequences, the film completely focuses on the main plot without any deviation. The interval block is really superb, by keeping some interesting elements. In the second half, the screenplay takes time to become gripping. After that, the film gets back to it's usual form. Towards the climax, the director creates a great level of eagerness. The climax starts with a high level energy, but it ends with a simple treatment for giving a realistic touch.
Main Negatives of the Film - The screenplay is slow only, which makes the duration of 128 minutes to look lengthy. In some scenes, the interest of the audience gets lower just because of the less impact. The beginning of the second half completely gets down from the peak of the interval point.
Verdict
'Raid' is a very good period-drama thriller, in which the raid sequences looks so gripping. Except the above mentioned flaws, the film doesn't have any issues. So, it deserves a 'worth watchable once' for the performance of the star cast and also for great tribute to sincere IT officers.
Note - The film doesn't deal with any commercial elements, especially action. The director treats the film with realistic touch, to justify the true story. So this film cannot be said as commercial entertainer.
Cut Short Rating - 7.8/10
