Plot - Naina Mathur gets rejected in many school interviews because of her 'Tourette Syndrome', since childhood. Later she gets a teacher job in St. Notker's High School. The students of her class fails to understand her caring nature towards them. How the students becomes friendly with her and how she helps them to come out with flying colors in the exams forms the crux of the story.
Performance of the Star Cast - Rani Mukerji delivers a solid performance, and she carries the entire film on her shoulder. She reflects the mannerism of the people, who suffers from 'Tourette Syndrome' in a very convincing manner. Her dedication for this film is really superb. Neeraj Kabi delivers his best performance, and he gives a good justification to his characterisation. The lead child artists (students of Rani Mukerji in the film) steals the show with a very convincing performance. The other actors have done their part well.
Technical Works - Avinash Arun's cinematography looks neat, which gives a fresh feel to us. Shwetha Venkat Mathew's editing looks crisp, by making way for a good screenplay flow. Jasleen Royal's songs are good to listen, in which 'Madamji Go Easy' and 'Oye Hichki' sounds very good. Hitesh Sonik's background score gives many feel good moments in the film.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Siddharth P Malhotra's vision is clear about his script, which makes him to concentrate only on the plot without forcing any unnecessary elements. In many scenes, he will take us back to our school memories. He defines the mentality of the students in a good manner. But, the treatment of the film is an usual one only, with many emotional moments.
Screenplay Execution - The screenplay of the film goes in a proper flow without any deviation, but it is slowly executed to make us travel with the emotions. In the first half, the problems of Rani Mukerji is well-defined in the beginning. After 20 mins, the film steps into the main track. The screenplay transforms from the fun factor to emotional side in the interval block. In the second half, the film maintains the right track by dealing with strong emotions. The climax of the film gives us a convincing feel.
Main Negatives of the Film - The plot is not a new one, which we have seen in many films and TV shows. The screenplay is predictable only. The usual treatment of the emotions is carried out, which could have been avoided in some scenes. The second half of the film looks slightly dragging. These are negligible flaws only, as the screenplay execution is so strong and neat.
Verdict
'Hichki' is an excellent feel-good school drama, in which the neat screenplay execution stays strong with the film. The usual treatment will not give us a bored feel. The film will make you smile at the end. So, it deserves a 'must-watch once' category for Rani Mukerji's performance and also for some feel-good moments.
Cut Short Rating - 8.2/10
