Plot - The film is based on the real life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham. Lakshmikant Chauhan is insulted by his own village people, as he goes on insisting every woman including his wife to use sanitary pads, instead of dirty cloth. They avoid it because of it's high cost. So, he decides to introduce low-cost sanitary pads. Did he succeed in his innovation forms the crux of the story.
'Pad Man' is a film, which is based on the story 'The Sanitary Man of Sacred Land' taken from Twinkle Khanna's book 'The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad'. This film is also a great tribute to the Tamil Nadu social activist 'Arunachalam Muruganantham'.
Performance of the Star Cast - Akshay Kumar delivered a splendid performance and he gave a life to that character. He reflects the struggle of Arunachalam Sir in every scene. He holds the show with his screen presence, and he will make us to feel for the emotional sequences. Radhika Apte played as the wife of Akshay Kumar, and delivered a very naturalistic performance. She apts well for any character, and she gave his usual best justification to her character. Sonam Kapoor played a very good supporting character in the film, and she gave her best performance. Amitabh Bachchan Sir played a cameo, for showing his great support to the content. All the other actors in the film have given their best performance.
Technical Works - The cinematography by P.C.Sreeman Sir is as usual amazing one, in which the village shots looked so natural. Chandan Arora's editing was neat with sharp cuts. Amit Trivedi's songs were so good, in which he gave his best in the background score.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Balki is very well-known for his films like Paa, Shamitabh, Dear Zindagi etc. We have to appreciate him for making a sincere tribute to our Arunachalam Sir's effort on low-cost sanitary pads. The problem, which a woman hesitate to share with men was handled in a very good manner. He showed the reaction of village women on sanitary pads, and why they were so stubborn on not using it. While sketching the character of Lakshmikant, he portrayed how a husband should support his wife, during her menstruation in the form of Akshay Kumar's performance. Some dialogues were so nice, as I was able to understand it so easily with the English subtitles.
Screenplay Execution - In the first half, the song used in the title credits to show the love of Akshay Kumar towards his wife was nice. The situational humour worked out very well. The different attempts of Lakshmikant for making a sanitary pad in his own hands was nice. The screenplay's pace was low, but it was very good enough to hold our interest towards the film. The expected interval block was a good one. In the second half, some feel good moments looked so nice. After the introduction of Sonam, the screenplay becomes an interesting one. The lecture by the Lakshmikant in New York, was so superb. The climax was a predictable one, but still the impact will be high.
Main Negatives of the Film - In between some lagging issues occur. The pace of the screenplay is slow only. The film doesn't have any twists and turns like that. So, the predictable factor is so strong. Other than that, we can't find any big mistakes in the film.
Verdict
'Pad Man' is a very good biographical comedy drama and also a sincere tribute to Arunachalam Sir. The film focused mainly on the edutainment than the entertainment, which stood strong throughout the film. It deserves a 'must watch once' for the strong content. Take your women to this film and watch with them without any hesitation.
