Plot - In 1980's, a gang undergoes CBI raid in the corrupted people's place and loots their money. How this fake CBI gang escaped from the real CBI's trap forms the crux of the story.
'Thaanaa Serndha Kootam' is an official remake of superhit bollywood film 'Special 26', released in the year 2013. But Vignesh Shivn made some changes for the taste of the tamil audience.
Performance of the Star Cast - Suriya delivered an outstanding performance and apts for that role perfectly. His dialogue delivery and looks were also nice in this film. Next to Suriya, Ramya Krishnan Ma'am stole the show with elegant acting to her character. Karthik Sir scored well with his usual style in the given space. Keerthy Suresh didn't have a good characterisation and her performance was not upto the mark. Senthil Sir and Sathyan shared a very good space in the humour portions. Suresh Chandra Menon Sir played a negative shade and he gave his best. Kalaiyarasan & Thambi Ramaiah have played an extended cameo-like role and they have given their best. RJ Balaji scored very well in the second half with some of his humour stuffs.
Technical Works - Dinesh Krishnan's cinematography gave a good feel and it perfectly sync with 80's backdrop. Sreekar Prasad's editing work was good enough to set a clarity. Anirudh's background score gave a good intensity to every scene. All of his songs were nice, in which 'Sodakku Mela' was the biggest highlight.
Director's Involvement with the Script - Director Vignesh Shivn tried to give justice to the original version with some changes. In some places, his own writing looked good. But at the same time, he failed to impress with that change. He didn't force humour as a separate track. He used it as a situational comedy track and it worked out very well, which got a good response from the people. His dialogues were superb, and especially he synced some dialogues with the current situation, which got a very good response.
Screenplay Execution - The film starts with a sentimental touch and it entered into the main track after 'Sodakku Mela' song. The CBI raid scenes were executed in a very well manner. After the Karthick's entry, the film gets more spicier and engaging towards the interval block. The phone conversion interval block was nice. In the beginning of the second half, the screenplay falls flat, just because of the unnecessary romance track. After that, it took more time to get into the same speed of first half. Towards the climax, the screenplay once again becomes engaging. The climax portion was not a good one and it failed to give a fulfilled feel.
Main Negatives - In both the half, the space given for romantic songs disturbs the flow. When the director presented a very good first half, he failed to give an excellent latter half. The climax portion had a forced heroism into it, where Vignesh Shivn had a space to end with that superb twist. But he elongated the climax sequence and made an abrupt finish to it.
Verdict
'Thaanaa Serndha Kootam' cannot be said as a very good remake of 'Special 26', as Vignesh Shivn failed to concentrate in giving a good second half and climax. This film is a very good treat for Suriya fans to cherish for his performance. By neglecting those flaws, the film deserves a decent 'one-time watchable' category to get entertained without any bored feel.
Cut Short Rating - 7.3/10
